Hi everyone!

I have been doing some research on DSLRs and read a bit about mini DSLRs but the information and options are so overwhelming I really have no idea where to even begin.

I am looking for a step up from a point and shoot. I'm becoming more disappointed with the lack of quality in my photographs as I get older. However, I'm currently a grad student and the dollars aren't rolling in like crazy right now.

I'd like to, ideally (this might not be realistic), spend under $300. Anyone have any advice for me or camera options in that price range that have worked well for you/you've heard good things about?

Thank you!!:)

If I were looking to spend money on a camera in the (sorta) $300's I would have jumped on this yesterday
$399 for a NEX-6...that was an $800+ camera at the beginning of the year.

The Sony NEX-6 is a mirrorless APS-c sensor interchangeable lens camera with the same image quality as the Nikon D7000 and Pentax crop body DSLr's, but in a smaller package.

If you can live without the EFV of the NEX-6 , there are still some great deals on the NEX3 and 5 series.

It looks like Panasonics GF3 is going for just under $300 at Amazon. This model does not have a viewfinder, only the LCD screen. Olympus Pen E-PL3 is slightly less $$$.

There are some entry level older models close to your price range, as well as used older mid-range models.
You are looking for a dSLR, or what is considered a "mirrorless" camera -- Some mirrorless cameras, just as the ones from Sony, use the same sensors as dSLRs, for basically the same image quality. While some others, like Oly/Pany, use a slightly smaller sensor (leading to more compact lenses).
They would all be big steps up from basic P&S cameras.

Assuming you are buying new...
I don't know Oly/Pany well...
But among Sony.. The Sony A3000 (mirrorless but looks like dSLR), the Sony A58 (a dSLR, slightly above your price range), or someone mentioned the great deal now on the NEX 6... which is really quite a bit above an entry level camera.

You can get a Canon T3 cheaply. Another older entry level in your range, may be the Nikon D3100.

Ive been using my D60 for about 3 years now. Reliable, easy to carry and it wasnt more than $300 a few years ago. I do wish it had a time lapse feature, however, my new GoPro Hero3 black serves that purpose.
