We don't own or have any intrest in a pool home or vacation rental unit, but we certainly are big fans. Since we have been asked a few times here in this forum, here's our long winded reply as to why we’re so excited about our pool home vacation.

Let’s put this in the proper perspective: this past summer we met my sister and her family (husband and two boys ages 8 and 9) at Niagara Falls for a long weekend of sightseeing. We had a blast! They are fun to be with and the boys are at an age where they can enjoy and appreciate the new experiences. So while the sightseeing was great, being in hotel rooms was anything but fun.
 Parking: find a spot and then be charged to park there!
 Check-in: 20 minutes wasted.
 Wait for the elevator.
 Haul your bags and cooler down long halls to your small room.

Two of us with one king size bad was fine, but there is only one chair, so someone has to sit on the bed. Their family of four shared a room with 2 doubles. The boys hate sharing a bed, so one slept on the floor. The grown-ups shared a double; they are used to a king.
 Family of four in one hotel room means several pieces of luggage, snacks, cooler, game boys, etc.
 Treks to the ice machine twice daily to refresh the coolers.
 We had dinner one night at a nice Italian restaurant. Realizing the kids really only wanted chicken fingers, we spent the rest of the week at the Denny’s Restaurant in the hotel. So much easier to coordinate without having to drive, find a place to park, and wait in line to eat. We dropped about $300 a day for meals for the six of us.
 When someone wanted to take a nap or needed some time alone, the rest of us piled into the other room and sat on the bed. Not comfortable.
 I need to keep in touch with the office and my clients. Every day I had to disconnect my laptop and hide it in the car trunk for safe keeping while we were out.
 When one of the boys was ready for sleep, all had to go to sleep. When one woke up, all were awakened. Just the way it goes in a hotel room.
 One of us goes down to the restaurant each morning to retrieve coffee.
 Check out: another long line, and for two rooms we paid about $250 a night.

Once again, we’re going on vacation with the same folks, this time to Orlando in January. Now let’s look at why the pool home is a better vacation for us.
 We paid the same amount for 1 week in Orlando as we did for 3 nights in Niagara Falls.
 Parking: pull into the driveway, walk up to the front door and bring your bags inside.
 No check-in, no waits for elevator, no long halls.
 Each couple has a master suite! The boys have their own bedroom and bath.
 We can make ourselves at home, putting clothes away in dressers and real closets.
 Full kitchen! We’re going to save a ton of money on meals!
 Two sitting areas, five TVs, six bedrooms, four baths and a game room!
 Breakfast nook and dining room!
 Our own heated pool! Now going for a swim doesn’t become a big production. The adults move to the lanai to supervise or jump in the pool with the boys. When they are done, no hanging wet bathing suits in the bathroom, we have a full size washer and dryer!
 With high speed wireless internet access. I can find a spot to set up my laptop and leave it there all week.

We’re within 4 miles of Disney. I’m willing to bet we can get there in less time than if we were on-site, had to walk to the lobby, wait for the bus and take the route to the parks.

Meals become our choice. If we want to go out we can, if we want to send out for pizza we can. Most meals we’ll prepare ourselves. There’s a gas grill out by the pool. I think we can eat 2 meals a day all week on what it cost us for a day at Denny’s. One trip to Sam’s Club and one to Winn Dixie and we should be all set. We’re planning on one meal a day at a restaurant. We will have saved so much money that if we want to do something extra we can.

 If you want early morning coffee, head to the kitchen in your pj’s. Snack time? Help yourself.
 If the others want to hit the park early, have at it. We’ll sleep in and have lunch ready when they get back. Later we’ll all head back to the parks for the evening.
 Send the kids to bed and the adults can stay up if they like.
 We plan to take a day or two and just sit, relax, and visit. Between the game room, PS2 and the pool the kids will have plenty to do.

What excites us the most are the comfortable surroundings, providing the opportunity to visit without cramming into a hotel room, sitting on the beds. We don’t have to listen to people in the next room or worry that he kid’s voices are too loud.

So we’ll take turns cooking, loading the dishwasher, and we have to make our own beds. Not a big deal for us. There will be plenty of time for fun and relaxation and enjoying the time we spend with people we love. We can’t imagine anything better for a vacation!

Feel free to add your thoughts, pro or con.

I agree with everything, which is why we rent condo's from skyauction. Although I have not stayed onsite at WDW, I have endured many hotel stays with my family of four. I have come to the conclusion that there is no "magic" with 4 people sleeping in one room for a week! My company sends all the employees, and their families to a deluxe ski resort for a weekend in Jan. Two days of constant "togetherness" is enough for me. I need some space to relax.

I have nothing more to add, you did an excellent job of pin pointing exactly why we stay offsite, in a 2 bdrm (minimum) unit.

Thank you djkeenan,
Thank you so much for answering my questions. We own a pool home and have not had it for very long so I am always asking different people what did you like, what did you miss, etc... I feel the same way you do about hotels and my family. There is little majic after spending 24 hours in the same room. Again thank you for the info. Isla Bonita

We've done the pool homes in WDW area and hotels there. We find that if we are travelling w/ family the villa's are the only way to go.

We are going in January too w/ my parents. As of today my choices are narrowed down to 3. All are 4 bedrooms and 3-3.5 baths. They all have a pool and a spa. They are all only 1-3 yrs old and much nicer than my house. The washer/dryer is a great bonus too.

We are in the final stages of picking one. The price is ranging right now from $660-$800 for 1 week. This includes tax and pool/spa heating. Pretty much the cheaper ones are in Davenport- the higher end right near Disney. We actually don't mind the drive from Davenport and may go that route (We've done it before).

So for 2 families split down the middle we are looking at $330-400 a week for all that. You can't beat it.

Now granted you do have to like the people you are travelling with. Otherwise this much together time gets old.

If you don't mind my asking where did you rent from?

Keep in mind that we are there during a very slow week... But they still have availability for this winter: www.sjsvillas.com

Very close to WDW.

please kept in mind that no area is safe.

so if you wish to kept your computer I would still be putting in the trunk of your car.

some of the thiefs in the area are so determined that they will take down a wall to get to a safe. then they take the entire safe and open it later. Happened at OKW.

houses as well as all the other area (condo, timeshares, hotels, motels) around Disney and in Disney - are prime targets. Because most of the people in these areas are at Disney, US/IOA or SW.

:sunny: I wish we had known about the pool homes before we bought our timeshare. We have been spoiled by our timeshare for the same reasons as the pool homes, we just have to still put up w/ check-in, maintainance fees and "maintainance meetings".

We love having the extra room. That is one drawback to staying on property at DW. Anything other than 1 bedroom is so expensive!

We are staying in a 1 bedroom condo when we go this year. It will just be me, DH and the kids who will sleep on the couch and I am getting worried about the space there! I think it should be fine, there will be 2 tv's and 2 bathroom and a full kitchen w/ w&d.

I would just give anything to get rid of this condo and be renting a pool home! I'm sure it wouldn't have been much more, if any, than our maint. fees and exchange fee for the condo!

If you have the choice between a hotel and pool home....TAKE THE POOL HOME!!!

II members can exchange into DVC.

it is hard but not impossible.

go join foxowners@yahoo - it is a group.

their is a lady who tells when she sees a DVC. She sees a ton of them!!!

spiceycat, I couldn't get that address. Is it an e-mail or web site?

Thanks!

I'd pick a pool home every time! We had a wonderful, gorgeous home for a fraction of the price it normally costs us to rent a home at the beach. (7 br, 7 ba house in Orlando, 8 nights $2400 total, similiar house in Myrtle Beach is costing us $5000 plus tax and other fees so closer to $6000 for 7 nights!). This just seems like such a value over the cost of hotels and the limited space I don't see why so many people are opposed to it. We all loved our house and it was nice to have time to relax in our own pool or hot tub in peace and quiet after long, crowded days at the park.

Very well said DJKeenan! We are so spoiled to all those extra things you mentioned. Makes the vacation much more relaxing and enjoyable!

We (DW, 2 - DS) had rented a pool home in February for 9 nights and we had a great time. On our next trip we would absolutely like to rent a pool home again. The only issue we had on our last trip was with the pool home management company. We had rented the home several months in advance and had followed up by exchanging several emails and phone calls with the management company leading up to our stay, in the hopes of preventing any problems from arising. Upon arrival we received the directions and keys at a designated lockbox. While the home was absolutely beautiful, we found that it was not the home that we had chosen to rent (even though all the communication with the management company stated that it would be, including pictures we had received), the home was (while in close proximity to WDW) in an area we were not familiar with. We had also paid for pool heat for our entire stay. The first 2 days we had no pool heat, even with several calls to the management company. When they had finally sent someone to the house to turn on the pool heat, they required someone to be at the home to let him in, which cut in to one of our park days. (Despite many calls, we have yet to be reimbursed for the 2 days we paid for pool heat but did not have) During our next trip, we would definately consider renting a pool home again, but would prefer to rent directly from an owner or a reputable company. Does anyone know of an owner who rents his/her home themselves or of a company that they have used before with minimal problems? Thanks in advance.

One of the websites for homes rented by owner is www.vrbo.com ................this is not only Orlando, but all over the world.

My friends used www.villadirect.com and no problems, said everything went as planned.

Red sox there are several owners on here who would be willing to help you just ask .

We rented a villa with pool when we went in July and loved it. because it meant when we had had a long tiring day at disney we could go home and relax and have fun in the pool. its definutly worth it. :)

Can I ask any of the owners here to avoid double/full beds in the future? For my family, it totally eliminates a home as a choice. We can manage in a queen bed, but prefer a king like we have here. Most of our friends also sleep in a king or queen at home. Sleeping in a double bed screams cheap motel, which is what we're trying to avoid with a pool home. :)

If we are planning to rent a home with another family, being able to choose rooms based on location within the house rather that bed size is a big plus.

For example, the 6 br/4 bath house that was just posted had the perfect space upstairs for me, DH & our 2 little ones - 2 bedrooms with a connecting bathroom. The twin beds in one BR are great, but the double was no good. And the other bedroom upstairs also had a double.

I thought the bunk room was cool though. :)

Gillian,
thanks for the info. When putting together our rental home I made the mistake of putting in just one king and we have 2 masters. It was a big mistake. When the queen needs to be replaced we will be replacing it with a king. Is there anything else you would recomend for the homes to have? As an owner we are always asking guests that have stayed in our home was there anything you could have used? This information is good for the next people who might think the same way. One guest requested a crock pot. I did bye one for them before they came down. I would never on my vacation use any kitchen item other then the blender, and that would be for drinks. LOL

that are a different colour than the "house" towels...
And extra, extra facecloths:)
And dishclothes, and dish drying "tea" towels, as opposed to sponges

Seems silly, but I found that it made such a difference in a many bedroomed/bathroomed house, it was easy to track down the pool towels, and just hang those up. Otherwise, I'm washing - what seems like - 10,000 towels/day! :teeth:

And with little ones, you can NEVER have too many facecloths..and the few we had was never enough, ie, 2 or 3 per bathroom. At least double that would be high on my wish list.

Plastic glasses - the pool area ones - that have flat bottoms. Why, you ask? Because when you run them through the dishwasher, water collects in the "top" of the bottoms, and sploshes over the dry dishes when you pull out the top rack:)

Lots of owners have this already, but perhaps bears rementioning:)
A "Great Big Book of Everything", ie local restaurants info, take out menus, hospital, dentists, etc numbers, and the like:)

Great thread:)

OP, you make very valid points for why a pool home is best for your family! That's for sure! I think you're making a wise decision on that. It all just really depends on what you're wanting.

Our first trip (Dec 2002) was booked online through hotels.com (do NOT recommend them btw!!! guarantee my butt!!!!!! No such thing exists! atleast didn't for us) and were supposed to get a pool home like you described. We paid in advance for 7 days there (1 week) and when we drove there arriving midday on Christmas Eve-- we were told to call ahead by 1hr because it was in a gated community. When we called, the owner said the home had already been rented out and they'd already told hotels.com that! We were there in Orlando on Christmas eve with no place to stay!!!! (panic for sure!)
We contacted hotels.com and they said they would arrange us a place just like it- and within a few hours they had us heading somewhere else. Turned out it was like townhouse apts (connected to others, in other words. To us it is exactly like a 2 story apt and while some of the amenities (seperate bedrooms and bath, washer/dryer, etc.) were nice- it wasn't at all what we paid for. We were supposed to have our own pool PLUS the gated communities benefits such as horseback riding, tennis court, fishing, golfing, etc. At this place we shared a tiny pool further from our room than if we'd stayed onsite and were in the furthest room from the pool! The pool was the size of a normal sauna- kid you not. No other benefits. Didn't even have a VCR (we'd brought tapes) and took 3 days for the manager to get us a VCR. My kids were used to going to sleep with a Disney movie playing- it was pretty awful. LOL

I could go on and on- but that experience left us not wanting to try that again... atleast not through hotels.com! (we contacted them afterwards and they refused any kind of discount of what we'd paid because they said they got us a place that COST the same as what we'd paid for... even though it wasn't at all the same, it COST the same. Well ofcourse it's going to be expensive to get us in a place on Christmas eve! It certainly wasn't worth half what we paid for the pool home rental!)

houses as well as all the other area (condo, timeshares, hotels, motels) around Disney and in Disney - are prime targets. Because most of the people in these areas are at Disney, US/IOA or SW.
Very true. The place I mentioned we stayed above had "issues" with the front door- it wasn't very secure and looked like it had been broken open before and then someone just slapped on a new lock. The mgr (when questioned about it) admitted the "apt" had been burglarized previously! Needless to say we kept our valuables, which were many since we did Christmas morning there!, in our vehicle parked at WDW the rest of the trip. Maybe not any safer- but it felt like it. LOL

Since then we've done onsite only. For US it works (atleast so far) because we find we'd rather spend more time in the parks than driving back to the place we're staying. We might feel very differently about that had we actually gotten a pool home like we were supposed to! We may decide to do pool homes in the future (not through hotels.com though! LOL) because now we either have to only go deluxe onsite or go on trips without everyone in the trip (ie: solo or trips with just me and the kids) because we are a family of 5. I'm not sure it's worth it to get two value resort rooms. LOL

It sounds like to me you have really thought this out and that a pool home is really right for you. However, PLEASE tell me you didn't book it through hotels.com. *fingers crossed that you didn't!*

(ps. we booked that trip short notice and we paid $287+ PER NIGHT for that pool home that never materialized for us. What we ended up with was not worth that and we definitely could have stayed onsite- we wouldn't have even needed two rooms at that time because our youngest was under 3- we could have stayed in some DELUXE resorts at that price! I'm sure it's much cheaper for pool homes when you book well in advance. LOL)
