Been a non-smoker for 48hours...

Wanted to wish you well! I know beating this will be hard but you are STRONG! and we're all here for you!

Seven years for me. I won't tell you the number of years that I *did* smoke. :) Me quitting was fairly a no-brainer. I was in the hospital for 11 days and you couldn't smoke there. When I was released, it wasn't all that hard to continue not smoking.

I found the hardest thing to get over was having a smoke after a meal, so I got used to not lingering over dessert and coffee. At home it wasn't an issue because I could immediately start cleaning up the dishes, and the compulsion would pass fairly quickly. When we went out for dinner (or something else to eat) I tried to take a hard candy with me to substitute for the cigarette.

I also kept track of the money that I didn't spend on cigarettes. Got a small shirt-pocket sized spiral bound notebook and every day in the morning I wrote down the $$$ that I didn't spend on smokes the day before and kept a running total. Out of all the little tricks and tips about stopping smoking, this is the one that's kept me from going back to smoking. I'm getting cheaper and cheaper as I get older. :)

In another day or so you'll be passed the physical part of needing a smoke. You just have to work on the other stuff, which is a piece of cake.

Jim.

Congratulations - you are doing great :thumbsup2

It does get easier as time passes. I would strongly suggest using the patch though - I could not even make it 24 hours when I tried with no help. I have also heard there is a nasal spray out that is highly successful for some people.

I quit by using the patch. I had wanted to quit for many years and had tried 4 or 5 times with no success. It got to the point where I really wanted to quit at one point but I just couldn't bring myself (and my family) to go through the suffering again. While I was in this state of mind I began planning our 2005 trip to WDW and found that WDW had gone smoke free. I decided then and there that I was not going to waste my Disney time looking for smoking areas! I got the patch once again and that was it. That was 3 1/2 years ago.

Don't give up - you CAN do it. It is hard and painful in the beginning but well worth it for you and your family (children with parents who smoke are more like to take it up themselves). These days with all the hardships of finding a place to smoke and having to go outside in the freezing cold and rain to smoke, it is just so much easier not to smoke - it'll make your life so much easier.

Just wanted to add my support. Me and DH quit at the same time 4 years ago. It was hard but so worth it. The one thing that helped us was having someone to be accountable to... I was not going to have a cigarette knowing DH would have to find out about it. Feel free to use us as that accountability if it helps and hang tough!!!

you CAN do it.

I have never smoked but I grew up with a mom and a grandma who smoked and it really bothered me what it was doing to their health.

Good for you for quitting!
