I've read threads on other boards about bedwetting and the advice there is to ask for extra sheets at check-in. However, I know that housekeeping does not provide DVC with extra sets of sheets. I'm not concerned with our August trip, DS will be sleeping on the fold-out couch, so I can pack an extra set of sheets from home and a matress pad. (we're driving, I always seem to add more to the packing list this way:rolleyes: ) However, DS is taking a trip with Gramma in October. She is getting a 1 bdrm but plans on sharing the master bed with DS so she can watch TV ect. in the living room after he goes to bed. I don't have king size sheets at home, neither does she, so sending an "extra set" is not an option. I think I can buy some pads that DS can sleep on, but if the sheets get wet in the middle of the night......poor Gramma:eek: Anyone have this problem? If we explain the situation to housekeeping do you think they might give Gramma an extra set of sheets so she could change the bed in the middle of the night if necessary? Pullups are not an option for us because DS was a VERY late potty trainer due to some pretty traumatic tests and kidney surgery when he was 3. In fact he wouldn't use the toilet for #2 until last October at 4 1/2. I can not let him go back to pullups for fear of regression. The bedwetting is actually a separate issue, there's a strong family history (until age 10) but his pediatrician and I can't consider pullups after all it took us to get rid of them! Sorry if this is too much information, but I don't want DS to damage a mattress that we all pay for!

TIA,
Kim

what about getting a king sized plastic mattress pad to put over the mattress itself? that would take care of the mattress issue. how about putting some towels under the fitted sheet on his side of the bed, that would absorb some of the wetness so it would not affect gramma, she'd just be doing a little more laundry the next day if he did wet overnight. hope this helps some, we went through this a couple of yrs ago with dd.

I was thinking pull-ups until you said NO PULL-UPS! The mattress pad is a good idea so the mattress isn't ruined. I would think housekeeping might be accommidating in this situation. I would ask for the extra sheets at check in. What about an aero bed of his own? We just purchased our 7 year old DD with a $35.00 Ready Bed from QVC. It has a sleeping bag built in and is battery operated. Go to www.qvc.com and search for ready bed (it is kid sized).

This might sound bad and forgive me if it does, but here it goes. My Grandma used to have incontinence problems and used sanitary pads. I know kind of a weird idea for a boy especially, but he probably doesn't know what they are for anyway.

Can your pediatrician suggest anything? I am sure Grandma doesn't want to change her clothes in the middle of the night because of a wet mattress.

Speak to the resort HK, and I am sure they will accomodate your DS's special needs

Pixie dust to him and to you for being so patient with him

When we went in Jan, my daughter had an accident, tired from walking in oarks and so much excitement, and I called down to housekeeping to ask for a change of sheets. They were very nice and asked if I needed a pad as well. Give them a call and I am sure they will work with you. Good luck.

Housekeeping will provide a rubber mattress pad and extra sheets for bedwetting at any resorts, including DVC. They don't want to risk a wet mattress any more than you do.

I'm sure if you ask in advance and explain the problem they will help.....Hope you have a great trip*******pixie dust***********to DS

I traveled to WDW with a bed-wetting son for years. I never had a problem with housekeeping bringing extra sheets (and blankets and pillows) during that time.

One suggestion - If a king-size mattress pad is too expensive, a cheap shower curtain liner also does the trick. It's only $1.99, packs up really small, and you can toss it at the end of the trip. Most now are soft enough that you don't feel like you're sleeping on plastic.

Another suggestion which may not be as helpful, since it involves medication: Our pediatrician gave us a prescription for DDAVP. It's a nasal spray, and effectively stops the child from releasing urine in his or her sleep. We only used it to avoid embarrassment (his, not ours) when our son went on a sleepover. He wet the bed until he was almost 10 years old, so it would have been quite humiliating for him if it happened at someone else's home!

Good luck!

I also recommend the shower liner trick...works out nicely when my DS is sharing the bed with his younger brother...

Unfortunately this doesn't always work for all children...didn't have any effect on my son..

Good luck and lots of pixie dust...

I just wanted to say good luck to you :) I do agree that I think HK will assist you.

Have you thought about investing in a twin size areo bed? We use these for our DS's when we travel. The best part is they are heavy plastic and can be washed off, twin size sheets fit, travel easy in a suit case and can be used for other trips as well. This will also allow Grandma to have the bed to herself.

The aero bed is a great idea!

Not sure what you guys mean about a mattress pad but in hospitals they put something that looks a heck of a lot like a puppy pad under patients with incontinence problems. You could pick up 10 or so of those and have your son sleep on it. Then you just throw it out if there is a problem. Or slip it under the sheets. Grandma will still have to wash but it might help.

Another option might be a summer weight sleeping bag or using a folded sheet for DS to sleep in. Keeps the problem compartmentalized from grandma.

Is your little guy a heavy sleeper? Personnaly I think I would wait till he was asleep and then put the pull ups on him then. About a half hour before he is due to get up, take them off he will probably never know the differance. Good Luck.

Thanks for all the responses. I am glad that we are going in August so I can check out the situation with housekeeping before his trip with Gramma. I think I will have her pack a shower curtain or pads just in case they don't have rubber mattress pads for the king size beds. Who knows....maybe this whole discussion will be for nothing.....one can only hope!

I'd ask but I seem to recall a single dad with a vomiting child and couldn't get new sheets even when he asked. Your experience may be different.

The resort will give you a shower curtain for this purpose.

They look like a shower curtain, but I think it is actually called a rubber sheet. It's similar to a flat bed sheet, but waterproof.

I know that you worked very hard on potty training, but it sounds like your son is still only 4 years old. From what I have read about bed-wetting, it's still quite normal at that age. especially for boys. You really shouldn't be too worried about it until he is 5 or 6 and that 20% of the kids still wet the bed at 5 years of age.

My 4.5 year old DD wears "Good Nights" to bed because she urinates at night. She was late to potty training and I also attempted to train her at night. I went through weeks of changing the sheets and pajamas (sometimes in the middle of the night), washing them in the morning, having urine all over my DD and holding her when she cried because she wet the bed again. I don't know if her bladder is smaller than usual or if she doesn't feel the signal to urinate while sleeping. It really doesn't matter for now since I don't think there is anything she can do about it until she is older. She started wearing Good Nights a couple of months ago and we are much happier. She doesn't get upset and I don't do loads and loads of sheets. She says "Pull-Ups are for babies!", but readily puts on her "Good Nights" when she changes into her jammies. She knows the difference between Pull-Ups and Good Nights and I never thought she would regress.

I don't know if the bed wetting is an every night occupance or just an every once in a while thing. You may want to talk to your doctor and see if s/he thinks that it's better to continue to allow your 4 year old to wet the bed or if Good Nights would be a better alternative. If you go with the Good Nights then you don't have to worry about extra sheets, etc for the next couple of trips.

Good luck!

You can purchase things called chucks from hospital supply store or local pharmacy. They are plastic backed pads with an absorable pad that can be placed right on top of the sheets.

These are commonly used in nursing homes and hospitals to catch accidents. Then all you have to do is throw it away and replace it. No sheets to change and it is much easier to deal with in the middle of the night rather than striping a bed and redressing it.

Have a great time!

There are sevreal different types of pads for incontinence problems. There are some that are plastic on one side and sort of a gauzy/cottony material on the other. You put the gauzy side up against the skin and the plastic side down against the mattress. These are disposable.

There are also quilted pads, about 3 feet x 3 feet square, that have a plastic liner sewn in the middle of them. These are washable and dryable in the dryer.

Either of these you can get at a medical supply store, I'm sure.

The plastic shower curtain liner is a good idea. How about buying a king size sheet at Target or one of those type of inexpensive places??? If color or pattern doesn't matter(and why should it if it's being used for this purpose?), then you can get them pretty cheap sometimes.

I also like the idea of the twin aero bed on the floor in the master BR next to the king bed.
