I posted this as a reply in a more narrow forum, so I figured I would throw it out there for everybody...

How comfortable are the beds on the Wonder (Category 5, if that matters)? We are used to a pillowtop mattress. I know the beds in the stateroom won't be that, but do we need to bring egg-crate mattresses?

I think that they are comfortable, but I tend to get a sore back when I sleep on ultra firm mattresses so I like them to be on the soft side of things.

We found the bed to be ok -- not too comfortable, but not a back breaker either. I will say that they are low to the ground, so tall people must feel as if they are sleeping on the floor! I am 5'6" and I think I remember commenting how while standing next to it, the top of the bed seemed to hit me well below the knee.

Hope you have a great time. ::MinnieMo

We were on the Magic but I am assuming DCL provides the same type of beds for both ships. At home we have a pillowtop California King, which is the best thing we have ever bought. The bed on the ship was supposed to be a Queen, but it felt more like a King, and was very comfortable. It was very low though...ours at home hits me about mid-thigh (I'm 5'11), and the one in our cabin hit me about mid-calf. That wasn't a problem, but just different than I am used to.

I would say the mattresses tend to be on the soft side...

Thanks for the help. I'm 6'3", though - from what it sounds like, I should practice sleeping on the floor before we go just to get used to it :D .

Your days will be so filled up you probably wont even notice if the bed is comfy. We always nodded right off from a long day of fun.

I cannot imagine having room to bring an egg-crate with the luggage. I am sure you will find it plenty comfortable.

Have a great time!

First, let me say, I have slept on the floor and while people explained the beds were low, they don't FEEL like the floor. (Yes, I knew that is not what you meant!) I found the beds to be just fine - not too soft not too hard. I found the sleep extremely peaceful - very quiet, no phones no email, no neighbors' cats or dogs...NO WORK....
What I really wondered is how big the suitcase would need to be to hold the egg crate cushion.....

We were in a Cat 5 (If it does matter, I doubt it though) on the Wonder in May. I can tell you I had a hard time waking up everyday! I slept like a rock, I am 5'6.
I just asked hubby who is 6'1 and stocky (I'm being polite ;) ) he said he slept very well. My mother in law did complain though because her bed was separated, and made into a twin. I guess they are very narrow and she was afraid she would roll off. But for us, it was very comfy like sleeping in a full size bed. Good Luck! :)

We have a shih-tzu - being away from him for a week should make for some very sweet dreams (they can be very demanding, even at 3:00 am).

As far as packing an egg-crate goes, the thought was to use space bags, but it seems that we won't need to.

Pretty soft, although if they join them to make a king bed for you, there's a mildly annoying rift in the middle of the two matresses.

Nothing to get in the way of a good night's sleep though. It was an awfully spacious bed for someone who's 5'2" and has a 5'3" gf.

No worries

The beds are low for safety reasons, if the ship rolls and you roll out... not far to fall. I found them to be on the soft side.

I have never had trouble sleeping soundly on any cruise ship, but especially on DCL. The beds are very comfortable, soft but firm. I slept like a baby, with the sounds of the sea comforting me.

Now this is high praise from a gal who judges all hotels by their beds and bedding. I'm a spoiled brat at home... 300 count sheets and a marshmallow-like layer atop the pillow top. We sleep upon a sheepskin that lays atop a featherbed, which lays atoop the pilloww-top mattress. I was leary the first time cruising, 5 years ago, fearing 7 bad-mattress mornings....but no fears, mon.

We moved this summer and we mucked out some of the boxes stacked in the garage, and I found my sleep/noise machine. I'll have to prepare during the next 74 nights by playing the surf sounds, so I'll remember the sounds of the sea rocking me to sleep.

Marilee.........shivering in snowbound Oregon.....waiting to return to school tomorrow, and also anticipating the snow storm of a lifetime (according to the news)princess:

Found them very comfortable. Much better than the ones from the Aircraft Carrier I served on in my younger days. Of course the Wonder was not as noisy either. :p

I also have a pillowtop mattress, it's actually VERY high (mattress alone is 16 1/2 inches thick) and both DH and I had problems sleeping. I found the mattress to be "trampoline like" and provided almost no support of any kind. There is a difference between a bed that provides support and one that doesn't, has no bearing on being hard or soft. If you are used to having a premium mattress at home, like we are, you'll be dissapointed in the beds. As you can see, we're not too upset in the beds, we're going back in November.

Edited to add: That I don't think bring an egg crate mattress would help, actually I think it would hinder the problems I find with the beds.
