Bed firmness/softness at Deluxe vs. Moderate resorts

Since I can't get the search to work and even though I know it has been discussed in the past, I ask again:

How are the beds at the Wilderness Lodge (or other deluxes) compared to the beds in the moderate resorts? I need a fairly firm (DW would say hard as a rock!) bed because of my back, but the moderate resort beds are so soft that after a few days I am in so much pain I can barely walk. Last year we spent 5 days in a moderate and I could hardly move to get into the car for the drive home on our last day. Not a fun way to enjoy a vacation, especially when you spend most of the day walking around in the parks!

So would a deluxe bed offer more support or are they still really soft? I know the Contemporary has the Heavenly Beds, but are those also really soft? We'd love to stay a little longer on our trips, but my back just can't take any longer on the resort beds. Our only hope would be if the deluxe's have firmer matresses, or to find something offsite, which would prefer not to do.

Any opinions on the matter?

For reference I keep my side our our Select Comfort on 100% firm!

Hi Golf4food

If you're looking for a good bed while staying at WDW you HAVE to go to the Swan or Dolphin. They have the "Heavenly Beds" as it's a Sheraton/Weston hotel thing. The last 2 times we stayed at the S/D and wow I could have just lied in bed all week.

From what I know the Contemporary does not have these beds.

We stayed at the YC and the Poly in Oct and the YC beds were HORRIBLE (was super stiff and sore the next mornings) and the Poly was not that much better.

The WL last Dec was pretty comfy but the best we ever had was at the Swan

I can't comment on the firmness of the beds at the deluxes (I think a heavenly bed would be really soft) or the mods, I find the beds at the values to be firm. Keep in mind that no matter where you stay, I don't think you will find a matress that is comparable to 100% firm Select Comfort.

Have you considered bringing a sleeping bag and sleeping on the floor?

My mistake, I thought it was the Contemporary. My source was incorrect then. :teacher:

More important than their location, how are they?

Hmmm ... I consider all of the WDW resort beds to be "firm". I too wake up with an achy back because the beds are too hard. We have a Beautyrest at home which is the same model as the Heavenly Bed. If you like your beds firm, you won't want to stay at the Swan or Dolphin.

I wonder if you can ask for a bed board to make the mattress a bit firmer if it turns out to be too soft for you.

We found the beds at the GF to be very comfortable. Same with the CR.

We had HORRIBLE beds at AKL. You could feel the springs as you rolled over. The beds we had a VWL were not so great either but nothing like the AKL ones. Of course our VWL stay was in May of 2004 and our AKL stay was Dec. of 2005 so hopefully both have been changed out.

The beds at the Polynesian were just heavenly! :cloud9: Very plush and nice for me as I don't like firm beds. Now the beds at POFQ were hard as a rock and I couldn't sleep well at all. I was so cranky I made it a point to never stay in a Moderate unless I bring some sort of memory foam mattress pad to put on the bed.

Hi Golf4food

Do mean how are the S/D or how are the Heavenly beds? :lmao:

The beds are really nice. Honestly the best think I've ever slept on. My DW totally agrees. Infact we've looked into purchasing one through the Westin site without paying an arm and leg to send it to Canada. ;)

The Swan and Dolphin resorts are fantastic. We've been to each one once and are heading back to the Dolphin this June with our kids. You really can't go wrong with them.

THe Heavenly Bed is made by Beautyrest. You can google it and buy a Beautyrest with a pillowtop and foam for a lot cheaper than from Westin.

You can also watch this thread over at FatWallet:

I hate firm beds and I adore my Beautyrest. I would say that it would NOT be a good bed for the OP.

funny enough I just think it has to do with when they upgrade matresses. We were at POR last week and one matress was nice firm and new with pillow top and the other was so soft it gave us backpain. What can you do?

I need a fairly firm (DW would say hard as a rock!) bed because of my back, but the moderate resort beds are so soft that after a few days I am in so much pain I can barely walk.

I have a similar need and my Fibro ends up flaring not just from all of the theme park walking but also from the beds whenever I'm not at home.

I have found remarkable luck with beds since I bought into DVC, though.

The firmest option I have found at wdw is the newer model of pullouts that they have in the studios of most DVC properties. They aren't like the old fashioned kind with springs and a thin mattress, but are more like a good mattress on top of wood. Many people have commented on how they are quite comfortable and they are definitely firm.

For the last several years DH has packed an eggcrate in his luggage every trip we take. I used to laugh at him but now it's like "what, you FORGOT the EGGCRATE?????!!!!!!!!" It really does seem to help the hotel mattresses.

Yes, but eggcrates usually make the bed SOFTER and the OP wants HARDER.

I have heard that some people find that a memory foam topper will work even though they usually prefer hard. (We have ended up with a memory foam mattress at home because it manages to work for both my DW who wants a soft bed and myself who needs a firm bed.)

I remember the last trip to SSR, I was popping 800 mg ibuprofen before bedtime just to make it thru the night!! The resort is fantastic...the beds are like rocks. I felt the same at the Poly and at WL. I need some give to my mattress!!

So far, I have found NO beds at WDW to be soft :sad2: I don't get it,

If you drive to wdw, then an eggcrate or memory foam topper would make a big difference.

It sounds like the beds at the Swan or Dolphin are soft--I haven't tried them myself.

Sadly, most of the beds are too soft for me. The one I had at SSR, was beautifully firm. Maybe we should ask DVC to make bed firmness a booking category. :rotfl2:
