My friend from work asked my advice about staying at Disneyland with her kids. She was looking for a reasonably priced hotel near Disneyland, and after seeing many great reviews of the Candy Cane Inn I recommened that to her. They came home last week and told me that they found bed bugs in their room on the last night, and that she and her kids had many bites. I felt terrible! She knew what they looked like because she teaches science at the school I work at. She was very matter of fact about it (not the type to over react)--but was upset of course. She says she reported it, but we didn't really talk about it beyond that.

Tonight I tried to look up information online about it, and I found that there were reported cases from the Candy Cane Inn last week!

It sucks but it can happen anywhere. It's not necessarily a reflection of a hotels cleanliness. Bedbugs travel in luggage and they're really hard to get rid of unless the hotel gets rid of all of their mattresses. Bummer.

Kathy,
I know--and I hope the Candy Cane Inn does get rid of their mattresses. I know they are a smaller motel, and they probably don't have the resources to get rid of the problem like a bigger chain might.

When my friend told me about this last week I was surprised--but I was even more shocked when I looked online tonight and found that other people had reported the problem this month.

Hopefully they will get it under control quickly. It looks like such a nice little motel.

Well this is not good at all! We are booked to stay there next week in two standard rooms. I'm thinking of emailing them my concerns. I hope they are on it. With it being spring break time it's going to be really hard for them to get a handle on this. Ahh...I really don't want book another place.:sad2:

I.... so... would do it (change my reservation if at all possible).... I feel badly for everyone who has ressies or is thinking of staying here, knowing there has been a recent report of bedbugs.

One question/concern to be aware of, first of all - are the reports valid?? It would be interesting to know how that website validates their postings.

That being said, it can happen, but is soooooo gross for me to even think about. Yuck!!

Did you guys see how many hotels in that area have listings of that in their reports? UGH! :scared1:

Good luck to all!!

The same bedbug site lists 20 hotels in the area with reports, including Disney properties.

I went to the 'BED BUG SITE" and checked some of the hotels. Most of the issues were up to 3 years ago.

I would like to share information about my stay at Candy Cane Inn a few years back. I traveled with my sister. In the middle of the night she let out a scream that made the room shake. She said she had a bug crawling on her. I looked and found a fuzzy worm like creature in her bed so I removed it and we both fall fast asleep again. A bit later there is that scream again. I pull all the covers back and found several hundred of those creepy critters. Both times I called the desk to let them know of issues First time no offer to be moved. This time I demand we be moved. So nice of the CCI to help us move with help or luggage mover-- not. Not even an offer of a free night, money returend for that one night, meal voucher, a kick in the butt offer me anything but nadda. This is the second time I have shared this information on the Dis. I so hate to talk poorly about a hotel every one loves --I sure did before this happened and the treatment I received.

Don't flame me please just wanted to share, with the bed bug being an issue now. They did nothing to get rid of the crawlers and I am thinking that would just be a fumigation issue. What would make me think they would take the steps to fix the bed bug issue which will be a much bigger problem to take care of.

There is so much to love and like about the CCI. I hated to have this happen to me and to maybe others before and after me :(.

OH NO! If they are at one area hotel they will show up at another. They spread like wildfire. My husband is already freakishly careful about these things (though we all should be I guess) and we aren't allowed to put anything down anywhere in the room until he checks all the mattresses and furniture. I know they are hard, almost impossible at times, to get rid of... but that is part of the business. Anyone staying in the area soon will hopefully check their rooms thoroughly and let us know if any problems!

We are supposed to go in July. I hope they get it taken care of by then. All it takes is one person to bring them from home or another hotel they were just staying at.

I used to watch a show a while back that followed a pest control company around on their jobs. For bed bugs they brought in heaters that killed them and no one had to throw anything away.

I hope everyone knows it is not my intention to bash Candy Cane Inn. I have heard such great things about the hotel--I am sure they have consistantly good reviews here and on trip advisor for good reason. I was just surprised by what I learned from my work friend about her recent stay.

It looks like the bed bug registry posts unverified reports, so it is important to read that information knowing that. Most of the reports at the number of hotels there are from a while ago. The most recent reports (as recent as March 17) are regarding CCI.

I read online and saw that what Pink Budgie said is true--they don't really have to throw the mattresses away to treat it. It is also a myth that they only live in the mattress--they often live in headboards, outlets, and under picture frames and electronics. So the whole room would have to be treated. A pest control company would need to be called in to take care of it.

Calm down everyone and click around the "bedbug" site in the OP a little. It only took me five minutes there to discover:

1. All three Disneyland Resort hotels have bed bug "reports"

2. I just spent six nights at Walt Disney World in Florida and decided to check there and, sure enough, almost all the WDW hotels seems to have these reports too. I did not check everyone because there are so many, but I did check three and they all had reports.

3. There are many advertisements on this site for Guess What? Bed Bug attorneys. Bed bug spray. Bed bug anything you could ever want to know or buy.

Sorry, I will take an independent site with unbiased posts over something like this.

Which is not to say CCI does not have bed bugs. I just doubt this site will be the proper place to confirm that.

I'm not too worried about the bedbug site, but the OP's story regarding her friend is what makes me nervous. I emailed CCI my concerns last night but it's still early and haven't heard back from them.
We are getting a brand new bed delivered today and the last thing in the world I would want to do is bring those things back home. We are going in a week...April 2nd. I looked around and there aren't a lot of rooms left for next week.
If I'm not 100% satisfied with CCI response and can't find another room at a decent price we might cancel the whole trip. :sad2:

Yep, the best reference of all is someone you know and trust. That would worry me. But I do not know that person so it does not help me. The OP was looking for guidance and I suspect her friend is the best guidance she will get and she should decide accordingly.

Not doubting the OP's friend in anyway but for people getting worried about the "reports" on the bed bug site have you noticed that there are only 2 "reports" for CCI and they are both on the same day, that just seems a little strange to me. I have booked and CCI for July and I honestly am not too worried. I will do the check of the room that I do everywhere I stay and that should be it. Bed bugs are everywhere, not just hotels even, so I'm sure any reputable hotel (which I believe the Candy Cane is) will investigate any reports from guests and handle take care of things.

:sad1: Oh no, I love the CCI as well as HoJo's … I hope they can get this straightened out.

Sorry to the OP and any DISer's who had to put up with BB's while on vacation.

Why don't hotels buy those ZIPPERED mattress covers and be done with BB's??? :confused3

My elderly parents in FL and were so scared last Fall when BB's were all over the place that they went and bought those ZIPPERED mattress covers from Kolh's. :thumbsup2 Many home stores sell them as well, BB&B, Wal-Mart, etc. The bugs cannot breathe and they just die inside those covers. You can also google and buy yourself bed bug LAUNDRY bags for when traveling. Just put your dirty laundry in those bags and you will not bring the little buggers home with you. :thumbsup2

Bedbugs:scared1: I just googled what those things look like and my skin is crawling! The photos of the bites are awful. I hope they get the problem fixed before your stay. :)

Folks, I am here to say that there is nothing to worry about. Unfortunately on the internet, anyone can post anything. But, it is not always true.

I have been the Front Office Manager at the Candy Cane Inn for three years now. I can assure you all that bed bugs have not been an issue for us, for one simple reason. We do not ignore any issues we find or that are reported to us.

We are a hotel that has been in the city of Anaheim for 54 years. We are owned by a single owner and we are the ONLY hotel he owns.

If you have ever been to our hotel, you will see that even during this tough economic time that we are in, we continue to invest in our hotel upgrading and renovating the property to better serve our guests.

Anyone who has questions or concerns about staying with us can feel free to contact me directly at 714-774-5284.

Thank you all for being loyal disboard readers and for your comments about the Candy Cane Inn!

-- Chris - Front Office Manager

Ok, everyone calm down. I called the CCI and asked for the manager. I spoke to the nicest man, Chris. He was very helpful in explaining the situation to me. He said he had just received 5 phone calls as of today about this thread. He has joined the DIS now to monitor and reply to this and any other situations that may pop up.

First and foremost... there isn't a widespread bedbug epidemic at the CCI. He is aware of this traveler's experience and they are dealing with it. He also added that they have a routine top to bottom inspection of their rooms, done by both housekeeping and engineering.

Any singular case of bedbugs will be dealt with swiftly before any chance of spreading. Mattresses will be tossed along with and other effected materials.

He added that the owner of the CCI would never sell the guests short by getting by with the bare minimum treatment of rooms. Whatever needs to be done to fix this and any other situation will be done.

Hope this helps. And, thank you to Chris for making me feel 100% excited about our summer trip to the CCI!!
