Beanie Babies what to do with them now?

My friend Nick is in the Air Force in Iraq right now. I had a thread a month or so ago about the toys and shoes we sent to the orphanage in Baghdad care of Nick who volunteers there during his time off.

If anyone would like to donate new or gently used toys, non-meltable candy and/or flip-flops or shoes to the orphanage just PM me and I will be happy to give you the address. Postage is CHEAP since you are only paying shipping to an APO which is a US address.

My girls and I sent over 40 pairs of flip-flops when Target clearanced them out of the dollar spot. :thumbsup2

::yes:: I heard about this at www.booksforsoldiers.com . You can pay for the Flat rate box and send it reasonably priced via USPS Priority Mail even to APO addresses. I have sent bodybuilding and fitness magazines, plush dolls like Beanie Babies, toiletries, etc. this way. The toys that were sent were given to children the soldiers met in the city or town, too.

Thanks. I never thought of the PD or FD needing them but that sounds great and I won't have to mail them!!!
I'll add Sheriff's Department and Highway Patrol. They carry them in their cars around here so that children that have to be removed from their homes or are in car accidents can have something to hang onto until they are reunited with a family member.

I had thought about sending mine to a friend serving in Iraq but when I talked to him about it he said not to send them because if they get the chance to have contact with the kids there, the older kids would usually beat up the younger kids to take what they had just given them...which is too bad...because I figured that would be a great way to clean out the ones that I just don't need...along with all of the dang Pooh Beanies that I collected...it all takes up space. All I can say is check before you send them!

My niece & nephew gave me some of their beanie babies prior to a recent move. I use them for swag while geocaching. (translation: I trade them for other usleless junk from the treasure chests I find in the woods while using a GPS unit. :teeth: www.geocaching.com)

If you have Disney ones that are new-with-tags (like us more obsessive collectors -- LOL), you could contact Give Kids the World to see if they need them. I sent alot of them over to them a few years ago and used the tax write off.

Look on the Internet. There are always organizations collecting for foster children, etc.

My daughter was born at 22 weeks gestation and during her long stay at the NICU she was given one of the larger beanie buddies that we still have to this day. It was bigger than she was. A great keepsake. :thumbsup2

We donated my DD's to our elementary school library. The kids earn points for reading and testing on books and they get to spend them in the AR store. The funny thing is my DD "bought" back one of her own beanies. Oh well, just thought we were getting rid of them.LOL.

You might look into your local foster care program. Kids that are removed at all hours of the day and night from their homes and shuffled off to an unknown family sure could use a special friend to hug.

the above link will take you to a really neat site of a young girl that started a non-profit to send duffle bags, a special note and an furry friend to foster care kids. She is always looking for donations...maybe this would be a great place to danate some.

Try your local Shriner's Unit. Whenever we go to a clinic (not the hospital) DS always gets a stuffed animal. Younger DS is encouraged to take one as well. :thumbsup2 We go to the Shriner's Hospital in Springfield,MA; there is also the burn one in Boston but not sure if they could take them. :thumbsup2

The children's hospitla will take them too. My son got some his last stay at the hospital and it really cheered him up.

A teacher would also be a good idea. My sister in law is always looking for inexpensive (or FREE) toys for her classroom. It is something for the kids to play with on in door recess days (rainy or too cold to go outside.) Or she uses small things like this as rewards and treats rather than candy, etc.

I work at a nursing home and we actually have some that were donated and they are attached to the pull cords, that the residents pull if they need assistance. Much easier for them to pull the beanie, then trying to pull the end of a small cord. We wash and or replace them periodically.

So check w/local nursing homes, too.....

My Aunt & Uncle who live in Fl have been sending care packages to the troops with the Beanie Babies included. The troops give them to the kids. From what I understand the kids really love them and the troops would love to have more to give to the kids.

Thank you all -- I have a memo going on my Palm now with these great ideas. I would never have thought of them.
Thanks OP for great question. :)

i actually have some beanie babies i paid nearly 100.00 for. OMG WAS A FREAKING BANANA'S OR WHAT!!!

now they are worth, hmmm...2.99 MAYBE.

Lesson learned. dammit.

I just cant part with them tho...who knows maybe in 20 yrs they will be worth 3.50.

Fantastic ideas for the Beanies! :thumbsup2

The title to this thread was certainly a blast from the past for me- both my dd's were avid collectors. We would travel for hours just hunting for beanie babies! I still remember the excitement of finding their first "Princess" bear! LOL!!!

I guess I can say we certainly had alot of mom/daughters/sisters bonding time looking back on it now- :)

Now where are those little buggers so I can dust them off???? ;)

I have 200+ Beanie Babie bears. They've never been played with and everyone has their originals hang and tush tags. They just sit there and stare at me. I, also, can't make myself give them up.

I would suggest the hospital. My kids have been in the hospital alot and they can always use toys. Even the Dr.'s offices that are at the hospital could use some toys. Or a donation sent overseas to an orphanage. My kids are both internationally adopted. I know when my youngest was at the orphanage in The Phillipines, someone sent over 2 dozen teddy bears at Christmas. He got one. I know that if you drop them off at an adoption agency locally, they send over donations when people travel to pick up their kids. Or when they escort kids here, they take back stuff. I know that is how it worked when we were adopting.
