I have a bassett given to me by a frustrated owner. She was six months old and I didn't know much about the breed. I have had her for 2 years now. Lazy Susan, Suzy, talks a lot. She lets you know when she wants something. We are having problems with her getting into the trash even with a child proof latch. She is very protective of her food and it caused problems with my daughter recently.

I can also vouch they are stubborn as heck. Suzy can be quite insistent on something and will do what I call a 'sit in'

Bassetts also have the 'wanderlust' and aren't able to find their way home like other dogs. It sort of scares me a little.

My Suzy doesn't drool though - her ears get a bath each time she takes a drink of water!

Well, two of them look very beagle-y! I love my girls. Two are very food focused, but Lucy (the spotted one) is really only interested in naps. She's been partly comatose since she was 12 weeks old. As a puppy, I took her to the vet because she had just lain on the sofa all weekend; no playing. I thought she was sick. The vet checked her over and said "Ma'm, your puppy is just lazy" (imagine strong southern accent)...

All three are very lovey, and they are very entertaining! I once heard that beagles are referred to as "class clowns".. very true!

I have a 3 1/2 year old bassett beagle. Molly. She eats EVERYTHING! Walking her is a challenge, I am always pulling things out of her mouth. She is much smarter than she lets on, knows commands, but only obeys when she is in the mood. When I walk her, if I chose to go in a different direction, she will lay on her back and do the "Molly dance back roll" until I relent and go in the direction she wants (this is not so good in traffic) She "talks" alot, loves everyone, is affectionate, gets along great with my older Rat Terrier, and all the boy dogs in the neighborhood know her by name. She is a great dog and I would not trade her for anything. Good luck with your bagel.

Ok, I have a beagle, so I opened this thread....and then I realized that it's THREE YEARS OLD!!

How in the world did someone manage to open a 3 year old thread?

And btw, suenmolly, LMAO @ the last line of your post, "good luck with your bagel"!!

We have a almost 3 y/o beagle named Sierra Nevada (after the mountains NOT the beer ;) ). It's funny because when people ask me how we like having a beagle I always say she is the perfect dog if only she wasn't such a dang food hound :rotfl: . Seriously, everything else is wonderful. She's is the MOST loving, loyal, sweet, hilarious, all around good dog. I CANNOT even imagine our lives without her now. I was another cat person (we have three and she thinks the little one is her 'puppy' its SO funny) but now I am just as much of a dog person too because of her. She's very very smart and is pretty well trained...my DH worked a lot with her. She listens most of the time unless she thinks she's being funny while doing 360's on the lawn while you're calling her in and she doesn't want to yet. There are three words you cannot say in our house unless you are serious about it treat, walk or walkie and bye bye. Any of those words are said you had either better have a treat, be taking her for a walk or going bye bye (IN the car). Just like a kid....will NOT leave you alone until you follow up and pay the piper...or the beagle in this case.

Congratulations and good luck!

Any names???

Again, let me just say, this thread is 3 years old!! Not being snarky or anything, I just think it's really funny that people are still giving this woman advice three years later!!

Thanks for NOT being snarky :thumbsup2

Perhaps we were posting the same time and I along with the other poster didn't realize it was that old. And gee imagine that I also have a beagle which is why I opened it up too.

Glad to give you such a chuckle!! :lmao: :rotfl: :confused3

Again...thanks for pointing that all out AGAIN!!

If this thread is three yrs old...I would love an update on how their doggie is doing now. Pictures even would be great !:thumbsup2

Oddly enough, someone bumped this on my birthday this year...I was looking for another old post of mine, and found this one. If anyone cares...we've now had Reilly for 3 years, and I don't think he has bassett in him at all. He is a clown, expert cat-chaser (ours!) and it's a good thing he's cute sometimes.

Here are some pics of our clown...

Please tell Reilly that he is absolutely stunning!!

And I agree about his breed --he is Beagle crossed with a Beagle.:upsidedow

First of alll, good for you for adopting from the "pound". This is were I have gotten all my dogs (four) and have had great luck.

We adopted a two year old beagle in October. He is very, very, very, LOUD (I mean very loud). He barks non stop, day and night. He is getting better but not by much. We have pretty much gotten use to the noise. At least we know when someone is at the door.

He is very active. He needs a lot of exercise. We walk him twice a day for two miles and then he plays in the yard with my other dog. He is very playful and loves chasing a ball around.

One of the previous poster mentioned a nose with a dog attached. My beagle spends all day sniffing. He is contantly looking for food. He will jump up if he thinks no one is looking.

I love Benji but I cannot say he is the easiest dog.
