With so many choices--which beach would you recommed for a family with two children ages 13 and 10.

A lot of that depends on what time of year you are going to be here.

I would recommend staying away from the Pacific Beach and Mission Beach areas because they are very touristy and popular with college-age young adults.

Also take into consideration what kind of entertainment you are looking for. If you are staying at the beach and planning to spend a lot of time at that beach, will you want to have a boardwalk with restaurants and whatnot, or do you just want a nice quiet beach for swimming and surfing?

San Diego offers a lot of variety when it comes to beaches, so I'm sure there is the "right" one for your family!

We go to San Diego every year for a week and stay in Mission Beach. Except for the week around July 4th, I see many families there, tourists, yes, because they rent places there. But if you are there in the summer, go during the week because it is not quite as busy. I really like Mission Beach. And if you go south of Belmont Park, it's not as busy.

We went last year in July and visited our friends in Carlsbad. They took us to a great family type beach frequented by locals. It's called Encinitas Beach. Lots of school aged kids. We liked it because it was clean, had good parking, good washroom facilities, and a friendly crowd. We're going back this year in July to go boogie boarding and surfing with our 9 and 12 year olds.

Greetings from Encinitas! If you come to Encinitas, I work at the Encinitas Visitor Center. Stop by and say hello!! :goodvibes

Hi there Kaycee!!!

You are so lucky to live/work in Encinitas. It is such a beautiful beach and community. I will look for the visitor centre and say "hello" next time. We're gonna be there in July. :woohoo:

Definitely stop by and say hello when you're in Encinitas. My "real" name is Karen, and I work Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

See you in July! :)

Someone yold me about a beach in S.D. that has a lot of seals. Anyone know what beach they could be talking about? La Jolla?

Yes, La Jolla has seals, but for an actual beach I LOVE coronado. Go to the beach just off of the Hotel Del. It's beautiful, clean, peaceful, and one of my very favorite places to be. :D

Yes, the "Children's Pool" (which these days has been taken over by the seals) is in La Jolla. La Jolla Shores is a mile or so away from there, and it's a very nice beach for families. As others have said, Coronado is also very nice.
