Honeymoon Island's Caladesi State Park was named in the Nations Top 10 beaches this year.
Duneden Florida is the next town just north of Clearwater Florida. Honeymoon Island use to be called "pig island" but they re-named it to get people to go there 1930's ??? not sure on that date.
From Honeymoon Island you can take the park boat to Caladesi State Park(Sp?) or you can walk there from Clearwater beach since the in-let has now filled in with sand...BUT BE WARNED- a 1 mile walk in soft sand ( north of last public parking lot at clearwater beach) takes good legs. Caladesi is 3 miles long once you get there, no stores or businesses,... very remote. Just a park ranger station, boat dock, and stand to get snacks
Caladesi is hard to get to (it has few people that make the trip) so you find lots and lots of shells. Best to go early in the day. ( THE BASIC RULE IS.... LESS PEOPLE, MORE SHELLS LEFT ON THE BEACH EACH MORNING) Very Beautiful and worth the trip if you love nature
Tons of shells, but I've still seen 3 old ladies try to pick-up 500 good shells each, and leave nothing for the tourist on some days.... just because they got up at 6:00 am.
Other days I've gone and the shells have been washed up for days without anyone picking them up. You never know.
Best time to shell hunt is after a huricane. For weeks after, many interesting things wash up.
