i know our trip is six weeks away, but I'm just pining for it and thinking about packing ;). Can anyone tell me how the beach is there for swimming- is it roped off before it becomes open water? How rough is it- can kids swim there without getting pulled by the current? I'd also like to manage kiddo's expectations. Thanks in advance!

The lagoons at and around Aulani are great protected areas for swimming. They look kind of like small bays so the size of waves is generally smaller and because of the shape they are pretty blocked off before open water (plus I think they do have rope/net but I'm not positive). My kids who are 8 and 9 do well swimming there and don't get pulled around much if at all.

Have fun!

I last went in Mar 2015 and there was no rope before the open water. The opening to the open water is quite far out so you would have to swim a fair bit to get there. Also, there was a Disney cast member that would sit and float on a surf board near the entrance to the open ocean. My husband thought he was a "shark" watcher, as there is nothing stopping any sea life from coming into the bay. The current looks strong near that entrance. I'd have them avoid going that far out, but I'm sure you can always talk with the Disney cast members on the beach and they will tell you how to swim safe in the lagoon.

It is pretty much like swimming in a lake. :) That's the best I can equate it too. It's certainly not like swimming in the open ocean and there is almost no danger of getting pulled in a current.

One thing I didnt expect was how quickly it got deep. You have a decent amount of shallow area but at least 2/3rds of the lagoon is deep water.

The lagoon is great for swimming laps. It's super calm with plenty of room for swimming before you get to the open water. I don't think it's safe to leave the lagoon, but not sure why you would want to.
