DW and 2 DD's (12 & 15) will be arriving 7/15/13 with plans to rent a car for the day. We want to make a stop at a beach mainly just for sight seeing and dipping a toe in and then plan moving onto Hollywood area. Best beach suggestions anyone?

We are trying Huntington Beach because its one of the closest to DL, but since you are headed up toward Hollywood, someone may know of a better one. Heard good things about Huntington though.

We loved Huntington when we went in April, and our visit was made easy because our hotel had a shuttle from Anaheim to there (Hyatt regency). The facilities at the beach are excellent and it's easy to walk cross the street to get lunch

We preferred Santa Monica beach. Huge expanse of sandy beach and the pier with the wheel etc and I they have an aquarium etc. We spent a very short time there last time as we were on a tour bus so going back again in September (minus tour bus) to experience more.

Newport Beach looks nice! We were in Anaheim last week. We drove out to Laguna Beach for the day, and it was pretty. I wasn't sure where we should go. We may try Newport next time!

When I'm in LA, I like the to drive the 10 W to the end to Pacific Coast Highway, go south towards Venice Beach/Marina Del Rey. Depending on how busy it is, sometimes you can find free parking on PCH. If you go to the more touristy part of Venice Beach with shops, body builders, and street performers, you will definitely have to pay for parking, but I think well worth it.
