Beach nearby?

Is there a beach that is near DLR? We will have 2 off days where we won't go to the parks, so we were thinking of hitting the beach if it is close anyway. i'd love for my kids to see the ocean. We are thinking of renting a car since the shuttle will be $125 round trip from SNA for the 5 of us, and a car is about $150 for the week.

We enjoy Huntington Beach very much. It takes around 30 minutes to get there from the DL area (if you go when its not rush hour that is). We love to eat at Ruby's Diner at the end of the pier and then watch the surfers. There is plenty of places to eat and shop, parking is not bad and we loved it.

Newport Beach is also very close and I am sure some of the locals on this board will have great recommendations.

Laguna's pretty but the parking is close to impossible - Huntington has a huge lot & daily parking fee. We tend to drive back & forth between HB to Balboa Beach & onto the island.
