Beach near Sanford

We are taking the auto train to Disney, and we where thinking of taking the kids to a ocean beach first. Since we arrive at the station at 8:30 in the morning, I can't see wasting a ticket for WDW our first day, when by the time we check in it will be at least 11:00 am. Has anybody been to been to any public beach nearest to Sanford? I thought we could go for a few hours and then drive to WDW and check in , and loaf for the rest of the day! I just want a plain old public beach with sand and ocean nothing fancy, that is closest to Sanford.

The closest beach to Sanford is New Smyrna Beach 30-45 minutes away. There is public beach with driving on beach if not closed due to high tides, which has been happening a lot lately. Daytona beach is only a little farther if you would like to go there.
