We are thinking of spending a couple of nights in that area. We'd like to be directly on the beach.

We are looking for a resort or nice hotel, not a motel. Any suggestions? Or any hotels to avoid?

Thanks :)

Well, I don't know if this info is still current, but fifteen years ago we stayed on the beach in Estero Island, aka Fort Myers Beach, and had a wonderful time at the Outrigger. It was right on the main road and the hotel was something like $50 a night(?). Of course, fifteen years ago is a long time, so who knows if it's even there, but it was GREAT!

There were tiki hut bars on the beach, you could rent jet skis, and they had little covered lounge chairs to sit on on the beach. It was heaven on earth. Best of all, you could walk anywhere left or right, or across the street, and eat at really nice restaurants.

If I remember correctly, it was a three story white building, maybe more motel-like than resort like, but really nice.

Hope this helps!

I love the Edison Beach House. It is directly on the gulf. It's relatively new, 5 years maybe, and the absolute best staff and ammenities. from sunscreen to microwave popcorn, provided daily.
There is a pool that fronts the beach. The website is www.edisonbeachhouse.com. Let me know if you have specific questions. I've stayed there for the last 3 years, for a week in January.
Just checked their website and they opened May 2000

the Pink Shell used to be a nice first class cottage resort
on Ft. Myers Beach. Definitely old style Florida resort for
families. Not modern/not high rise/not trendy but good beach and
lots of families.

I live about 20 minutes from there. I can tell you NOT to book the Lani Ki! They are directly on the beach but the owners have been in trouble with local law enforcment several times for underage drinking!!! And it is no accident that the minor was served. It is also a place that many local teens hang out at during school breaks. The local teens even go there to use the pool and aren't stopped. It is not a nice clean place.... Pink Shell is nice. As someone else said...it is not a new hotel but very nice and old FL feel. There is also Diamond Head. That is a fairly new high-rise. My husband has attend meetings in the meeting rooms there & said the place is beautiful. There is also Point Estero (I think that is the name), that is another nice one. It is a high-rise directly on the beach as well. They have suites that are really nice. My cousin had her wedding there & flew faimly from NY & put them up in there. Like I said....just stay away from the Lani-Ki...as a matter of fact, there is a local band that just put out a CD (my daughter knows the guys from school) and they talk (rap) about getting high at the Lani-Ki!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Diamond Head resort is one of the nicest on the beach. It's an all suite resort. Has a tiki bar, large pool, screened in lanias on all the rooms. Nice restaurant (Chloe's) right in the resort. I have seen it come up on Priceline. There is also Gull Wing which is further down on the beach owned by the same people which is very nice too.
Stay away from the Lani Kai!!! YUK, YUK & YUK!!
also, the Pink Shell is being renovated and tehre si a lot of constuction going on which would probably be noisey.

Thanks to everyone who replied!!!

I booked us at the Diamond Head! It looks like a nice resort, and the price was more reasonable than some that we looked at.

Thanks!!!

Thanks!

Dh wants to move to Florida, and this is one of the areas we are seriously considering, so I thought we'd check it out for a few days.

Is it a nice area to live in? Any negatives?

We moved here four yeras ago from Boston. It took a little getting used to it but we are adjusted and love it! I like a little more activity, but frquent Miami to get my fix. The kids love it and the schools in Ft. Myers are very good. You can geta nice house for your money butit is a rapidly growing area and the prices are climbing! I like where I live, I can be at FMB in 11 minutes and Sanibel in 6.
I'm not sure what you are looking for but if you need any specific help or questions about the area email me, I'll help you. There are some not so great areas out there too, FT. Myers is a big area. Good luck.

Thanks!

I'll definitely need some assistance if we do decide to relocate to that area.

We are in Illinois right now (near St. Louis). DH has been bugging me for years to move to Florida. Now he has my father on his side  (my parents will follow us wherever we go because of their grandchildren!)

I'll definitely send you an e-mail if we do decide on the Fort Myers area.

Thanks again :)

Teresa
