Beach Day

We are thinking of having a day away from the parks and doing a beach day!
Does anyone have any thoughts on a family friendly beach, either Atlantic or Gulf side is good.

We are thinking about flying into St. Petersburg/Tampa on the gulf side and staying in the Treasure Island area before heading to Disney.

I went to Treasure Island many times as a kid- I think it is only 1 hour 15 min from Disney- white sandy beaches and a great pier to walk to.
