Beach Club or Contemporary?

Which resort, CR or BC, would you recommend for a family with two adults and three kids (3,5,7)? It is for a early/mid-March trip prior to a Disney Cruise. 6 nights, 4 day non-hopper tickets, so 1 day per park.

We were just at the Poly in late August and loved it, both the convenience and resort, but want to try something new. These two resorts are the best deals for our dates.

We just stayed at Beach Club for the first time earlier this month. We fell in love with this resort! The pool is just amazing and we spent every afternoon there. We loved the rooms - beautiful and very clean. The proximity to 2 parks was wonderful - we walked to Epcot in 5 minutes and took the boat to DHS and that was nice. Buses were surprisingly the best experience we've had on property. We never waited long for a bus, and we never had to stand even sharing with YC and being picked up after them. The whole Crescent Lake area is just gorgeous- we spent most evenings after the parks, just walking around and enjoying the atmosphere and walked over to Boardwalk. By day 3 we had already decided that next September we were staying at BC again. It easily became my new favorite.

We also love the restaurants. We made sure to do both breakfast and dinner at Cape May Cafe since we were staying right there. Cape May breakfast is our favorite character breakfast, we loved it! Dinner was great as well.

I think the resort amenities (pool, primarily) look more kid-friendly at BC. Plus, since you're only planning one day at MK, the walking convenience of CR has less of an impact. In your situation, I'd choose BC.

Since you've already stayed at a monorail resort, I would try Beach Club. It's really pretty over there. We found Stormalong Bay hard to manage when our kids were younger though, so take a good look at that if that is a reason you are staying there. One problem was the slide was across the public path, so one of us would go with the kids and one stayed by the pool, and it was kind of a pain.

Especially after staying at Poly, I would choose the Beach Club over CR. CR is great for its convenience to MK (and I love it for historical purposes), but that's really where the appeal of CR ends IMHO. BC, on the other hand, is a destination all to itself. The pool and amenities are fantastic, the theming lovely and the proximity to EP, DHS, the Boardwalk and the other EP resort restaurants cannot be beat.

If you have young kids, you cannot beat the monorail for an easy ride back to the CR.

BC definitely. I have stayed at BLT rather than Contemporary (but close enough) and BC. BLT/Contemporary have a great location but as the other people have also stated you will only have the benefit for the one day you go to MK. BC's pool is a small water park in itself. The rooms were very spacious, the dining wonderful and it's a in lovely area to stroll around, with even more dining options at the Boardwalk and YC. We didn't do our research and went to the bus stop at 7.30am for EMH at DHS and found out you can't get the bus! So we walked (20 mins stroll). Another benefit is entering Epcot at International Gateway, the lines for security were a lot shorter than the main entrance. We can't wait to stay at BC again.

I haven't stayed at either, but I have been to both. The plus of being at the Contemporary is having the monorail to TTC to catch the monorail to EPCOT and it's also walking distance to the Magic Kingdom. If the pool is something that is in your decision making, the Beach Club has the best pool on Disney property. That is what I have heard. I hope to make it to the Beach Club someday to try out the pool. Another plus for the Beach Club is you are walking distance from the International Gateway Entrance to EPCOT. I have also heard it is a 15 minute walk to Hollywood Studios or you can take the boat. If you plan on staying for Illuminations, that exit is very convenient instead of having to walk all the way to the entrance of EPCOT and wait for the monorail. Then when you get to the TTC, you will be the last monorail stop on the resort monorail which is usually a 15 minute trip to the Contemporary.

Based on everything I said above, I would probably recommend the Beach Club. The boardwalk area is a really nice area to stay on property.

Location-wise, you can't beat either one. Both are great resorts. Since you're looking for a change, the BC would definitely provide that with regards to location and theming. The pool is terrific there; it is just okay at the Contemporary IMHO. You'll have lots of eateries to choose from since you'll be close to the Boardwalk, the Yacht Club and Swan/Dolphin as well as Epcot. Being able to walk to any theme park is a huge plus and timesaver. The CR has larger rooms, although not appreciably so. One aspect I dislike about the BC is that many rooms have tiny balconies, but not everyone cares about that, especially if they'll be out and about most of the time anyway. Beaches and Cream is also wonderful; don't miss it!

Another one for BC since you are only doing one day at MK. I'm not a fan of CR, it's my least favorite of all the MK resorts and I've actually stayed at OKW instead of CR on one trip even though CR was less. I love the Epcot resorts, the walk to Epcot and HS and just the feel of the area. I would think with little ones, the lack of a full balcony would be a plus.

I've never stayed at CR but I have at the BC. I would pick the BC. We loved it. The pool is amazing, lovely walk to Epcot, the boardwalk. It's really magical.

WE have stayed at both multiple times. Our favourite of the two would be the CR, however we also like the BC. It really depends upon what you are looking for in the resort and your room.

Rooms:

The CR has Larger rooms, sometimes much larger. BC rooms are variable in size, but no regular rooms in the BC are as big as the CR standard rooms. Some BC rooms only have two queen beds, no daybed. AT the CR almost all rooms are the same size and all have a daybed. In the BC you may have a small, standing room only "Juliet" balcony. If staying CR you will have a large balcony if staying in the tower, sliding glass doors that open to a rail on the second and third floors of the garden wing, a patio if staying garden wing and are on the ground floor. I have stayed in the larger BC rooms and in the smaller BC rooms. I have stayed in all room categories and views at both resorts as well. No rooms in the BC are as large nor as comfortable as the rooms in the CR, IMO.

Pool:

The pool at the BC is huge and winding. It is lots of fun but can be a nightmare for parents watching three kiddos. The entrance to the slide requires exiting the pool area altogether and crossing the public thoroughfare around the lake to Epcot and DHS. So the pool is either an attraction or a problem depending upon how you and your children will be in that environment. The CR pool is very plain. It does have a splash area and a nice slide, but there is no theming. We enjoyed the pool anyway. It has nice views over the lake and has never been crowded when we have been there. It is easy to keep track of little ones.

Dining:

There is great dining available at either the BC or the CR. We personally like the dining options at/near the CR better. Quick service is a weakness at BC, IMO. They do have the Marketplace, but we are not fans. It seems inconvenient and we just haven't found the selection to be very good. OTOH, the Contempo Cafe has great food and is a convenient place to get a nice quick meal or snack. Cape May Cafe (character buffet) and Beaches and Cream (soda shop/hamburgers) are options at the BC. The CR has Chef Mickey's, The Wave, and The California Grille. From the BC you can walk to either the YC, BWI, Swan or Dolphin for their dining options. All have some good choices. However, from the CR you can take a boat to the WL (great dining options!) or FW (Hoop Dee Doo!) or you can take the monorail to the Poly or the GF. The Poly and the GF have really good dining options that surpass the option in the Epcot resorts, IMO. As you have already stayed at the POLy, you are probably quite familiar with the offerings there.
The BC is next to Epcot and WS, but if you don't have PH tickets then that isn't an option.

Access to parks:

We think that the transportation benefits of staying at the CR are second to none. You have the monorail or a walking path to the MK. You have monorail access to the Poly and GF and you have monorail access to Epcot (via a transfer at the TTC). You have boat access to the WL and to FW. You do take a bus to DHS and the AKL. However, you are a 5 minute walk to the MK bus stop, which gives you direct bus access (no transfer) to every WDW resort on property. No other resort has that level of near direct access to almost everywhere on property.
The BC has walking distance/boat access to both Epcot and DHS. That is very nice and convenient. The location for these two theme parks is awesome! Buses to the MK and AK. Bus to a theme park and then transfer to a resort bus to get to any WDW resort other than the Epcot resorts.

The resort common areas/getting around:

The BC has all the rooms under one roof, but distant rooms are a long walk along confusing convoluted hallways. We found it easier to walk everywhere outside. The CR tower has its elevators in the middle of the building. walking from your room is very easy and along a relatively short hall to the elevator bank. Some people have complaints about the elevators but we have never had any problem (either waiting over long or having a problem getting on). The tower is compact so everything seems conveniently nearby. Even the Garden wing has a covered walkway to the main building and no rooms are very distant. The CR has a fourth floor deck area to watch Wishes from the resort, which is nice. The BC is on the walkway around the Epcot resorts and is conveniently close to the BWI to go and watch the buskers over there during the evening.

Theming:

The theming is subtle at both these resorts, IMO. Everyone's opinion on theming is subjective so it is probably best for you to look at both and decide for yourself. Many people do not like the theming at the CR. I didn't either until I stayed there. Now I think that it is awesome. Neither one has the WOW! theming that you get at the Poly, IMO.

Good luck choosing! These are two really nice and convenient resorts with lots to recommend them!

My bottom line: I would recommend the CR.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I think we're going to do BC this trip. We booked Poly last time in part for monorail convenience and then it was down half the times we planned to use it, so I think the ability to walk to Epcot and possibly Hollywood Studios makes BC seem most convenient for this trip.

I just returned from a week at the Beach Club (our first onsite stay) and we LOVED it! We also have 3 kids (10,7 4) who loved it! We did a lot of dining all over during the week but even cancelled a dinner offsite and went back to Cape May for the buffet instead. We also could see the fireworks from Hollywood Studios by the smaller quiet pool? It was next to the laundry facility....

We have stayed at both and the best thing about CR is the walk to MK. Other than that, we were just kind of meh about it. In this case, I would say BC would be the better choice!

I grew up always staying at the Beach Club and the location can't be beat. Also, the pool is the best on property.
