Hi all,

I was just reading another post where the person said the Beach boys were comming to epcot. In just a few minutes I couldn't find anything about specifically what day and time. I think we'll be avoiding Epcot that day, it will be packed probably.

Thanks
Minnesota

Since two of the Beach Boys are dead (Carl and Dennis), one has a fried brain (Brian), one isn't speaking to the other remaining BB (Al Jardine and Mike Love), it really should be called Beach Boy (Mike Love) and a bunch of other guys.

Don't avoid Epcot just because of Mike Love. It won't be a problem. The only crowd will be over by the America Theater where the Eat to the Beat concerts are going on.

LOL!! I was telling this to my mother who is going with me this year and she said the same thing! Thanks for the help!

I'm not making plans to see the Beach Boys. Last few times I saw them perform, being an ex-musician, I was kinda embarrassed for them. Not really the "Beach Boys" any longer. But yeah, the lines to get in will be long so hopefully, that will decrease crowds in the rest of the park.

So far... the best group has been Kool and the Gang. I did not expect it, but they really put on a fantastic show. Look for them to be "invited" back in '06!

Isn't Bruce Johnston a part of the band? He was one of the early Beach Boys too.

Bruce Johnston didn't come along till after Brian Wilson left the group, maybe in the late 80's.

Beach Boys were and will always be:
The Wilson Brothers, Brian, Carl and Dennis
Their cousin, Mike Love
And their friend, Al Jardine.

Sorry Deb, but you are dead wrong on this one. While we immediately think of Brian, Carl, Dennis, Mike and Al as the "only" Beach Boys the liner notes on The Very Best of The Beach Boys Sounds of Summer CD indicate Bruce was a member of the group from 1965-1972, and 1978-Present. Maybe not an original Beach Boy from 1961, but a Beach Boy still.

The CD was released by Capitol Records in 2003. The Beach Boys official website indicates that Bruce filled Brian's spot when he quit touring in late 1964 in order to spend more time in the studio.

For the record - Bruce Johnston is a part of "The Beach Boys Band" that will be playing at Epcot in late October. Interestingly enough, it was Bruce who wrote the 1971 Beach Boys song Disney Girls and Barry Manilow's hit song I Write the Songs.

saw them last year, they were great, very huge crowd, go early, or better yet get something to eat and sit at a table and just listen!!!

They were good last year but I won't be back this year. They aren't the true Beach Boys, they are just a shadow of what they used to be.

What?????????? You mean they won't be the same group that they were 40 years ago. :teeth:

I don't expect them to be the same as the original but something in the name indicating that they aren't quite who they used to be like the New Beach Boys or something would be nice.

Mike Love's website continually refers to the group as "The Beach Boys Band" but shows promo material referring to them as "The Beach Boys."

Great posts RoyalCanadian.

The last 4th of July concert with the ORIGINAL BEACH BOYS was in 1983 in Atlantic City. Soon after, Denis Wilson dove from a friend’s boat and never resurfaced. Then, in 1998 Carl Wilson died of lung cancer. Now Brian Wilson with the “fried brain”...technically suffers from a condition called schizophrenia. What a tragic story. So yeah…I guess things have changed after 44 years. What do you expect? What are all of us going to be doing in 44 years? That’s if we’re still alive. Mike Love is 64 years old and still ROCKIN’!!! And the others are not far behind him. I give these guys lots of credit whether they’re together or in part.

As far as Bruce Johnston not being an original, so what! As far as I’m concerned, he is a Beach Boy through and through, since Brian called him into the studio to record “PET SOUNDS” (1966), possibly the greatest pop album in history. Bruce is a part of musical history. In one of my favorite songs “God Only Knows” (which Paul McCartney and Elton John talk about even to this day) Brian AND BRUCE sang on the tag behind Carl’s lead vocals. Back to Paul McCartney, he even said “Pet Sounds inspired the Beatles’ ‘Sgt’s Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album”. Paul always admitted that the Beatles would not be who they were without the Beach Boys.

I had the privilege to meet Mike and Bruce this summer at their Beach Boys Band concert and it was one of the best concerts my wife and I have ever been to. In a perfect world it would be legendary to see all the Beach Boys together in concert, but guess what, we don’t live in a perfect world! If we lived in a perfect world, I would have met Walt Disney and have seen Elvis Presley in concert. Mannnnn...a guy can dream, can't he? ;)

So, whether I see Mike Love and Bruce Johnston as The Beach Boys Band, Alan Jardine in Endless Summer Band, or Brian Wilson with the Wondermints, it’s ALL GOOD in my book. As long as any of them are still kickin’ - I hope they continue to share their wholesome, clean fun music with me and the next generation.

:cool1: "Good Vibrations" :cool1:

they performed at Disney's California Adventure when we were there a few years back....fortunately we had a great view from our room so my husband and i watched from the privacy of our balcony, where we could sing and dance to our hearts content, without embarrassing our 18 and 21 year olds....the only one who saw us was the guy out on another balcony near us doing the same thing...

I heard an interview with Paul McCartney relating how he felt when he first heard Pet Sounds played on the radio. Apparently he pulled his car over to the side of the road and realized that he would never record the greatest pop album -- because he was hearing it then and there.

One of my favourite Doonesbury cartoons shows Andy Lipincott (dying of AIDS in a hospice) receiving the Pet Sounds CD from his good friend Joanie Caucus. His reaction is so true to form, "I did it! I lived to hear Pet Sounds on CD." So true to form he dies listening to "God Only Knows."

Another Beatles/Beach Boys bit of trivia -- supposedly "Surfin' USA" inspired "Back in the USSR."

"The Big Kahuna"

According to Mike Love, Paul Mc played him some riffs (telling Love he was inspired by the Beach Boys) and Love suggested things to write about in the lyrics...ala the girls of ussr. I remember watching this in the Endless Harmony documentary. :p

Either way, not a big fan of Love. For reasons I wont get into. :3dglasses

As for the 'original' Beach Boys, you better include Bruce Johnston in the lineup. Not only was he participating member for the Pet Sounds recording (he's the second main vocal in God Only Knows, after Carl Wilson) but he also wrote AMAZING tunes for the Beach Boys, I highly suggest you check out the Sunflower/Surf's Up album.

Surf Up's is where you will find Disney Girls (1957) :3dglasses...one of my favorite songs...coincidentally written by Bruce Johnston :)

I wanted to make it up this Monday to see the Beach Boys band, even though Im not a big fan of Mike Love (well, he IS a Beach Boy afterall)...I still think very highly of Bruce Johnston and would love to see him perform!

I think due to the hurricane, it might have been cancelled. :(

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! - they cancelled the Ft. Lauderdale show? :sad2:
Thanks you kids for all the fun facts. GIVE ME MORE!!! Did any of you read Jim Fusilli’s new book about Pet Sounds? I loved it because Jim Fusilli is a big fan of Walt Disney and I enjoyed how he related Walt, California, and The Beach Boys. I give it two thumbs up.

Jim Fusilli's book

Back to Minnesota’s original question: If Epcot is going to be anything like "Cool And The Gang" last year, we had absolutely no trouble at all. Part of our group manned our position for Illuminations and others of our group went to see the concert. Epcot is so big that the people dispersed nicely. I wouldn’t let the “Food and Wine Festival” stop you from going to Epcot. :bounce:

Actually my mom and I went to a Beach Boys concert around our hometown. Brian was there (and one of the other ones I don't know who), but Mike wasn't there.

The Beach Boys were almost 2 hours late. We overheard someone saying that they were waiting for Mike.. and he never showed. But I don't know.

We loved the concerts. After a slow start (sound men were off) they were up and going. The crowd loved them. Sure, the original band would be nice, but so would any original band...not too many of those around anymore from the 60's. I noticed no one mentioned who Bruce Johnston followed in the group (unless I missed it)..Glenn Campbell! I think anyone who follows the group realizes it's not the original..or they would when they saw how young the newer (and very talented) members were..just like most of the bands playing at Epcot during Flower Power and Eat to the Beat series. The audience ate up Mike Love's performance. He's certainly not what he was 40 years ago, abut we really enjoyed all of it.
Brain Wilson and his gang played in NY last month, and the reviews from the newspapers were awful, but the crowd still loved him.
Last night was the most crowded I can remember seeing Epcot..the whole park.

Beckwhy, was that recently? Brian has his own band, and I doubt you would see him and Mike Love together. Brian played in NY last month, as did Mike Love, but one was in Albany, and one was in Cooperstown.
