BE runs from Coast 2 Coast ** November 2015 ** Updated 3/17 It's Registration Day!

We're really excited! We opted for a 3 day cruise because we have never been on a cruise and then it snow balled into WDW too! There are so many places to go and things to, eat and see that it really requires more planning than DLR.

Sounds so exciting! Enjoy planning it. I'm having an interesting time trying to figure this out already. There are a few things I have to coordinate with our tickets alone that's becoming frustrating but now I've figured it out and have to wait. Trying to put together some info to share with my friend who's going with me in Monday to see what she thinks.

We'll have to plan something a little closer. Have you stopped by the Tink thread over on the Disneyland or WISH board?

OK, so I'm hoping to get introduction posts soon. Resort is booked. Tickets are ... in progress. Now I just need to figure out what parks we are actually planning on doing, dining, and fast pass stuff? Am I missing anything?

Welcome, and enjoy! I had to make a very hard decision and not register for the Disneyland Half this year. I can only imagine how much fun it's going to be though, between the 10th anniversary of the event and Disneyland's 60th anniversary celebrations going on.
I can't wait Disneyland is my fav of the both. Love the Walt connection....

We're really excited! The girls are paying for the trip and such. I'm paying for MVMCP and that's about it. I feel so spoiled!!

I'm excited to see your plans and for your trip report. I've always loved your pictures!

Nope on the Tink thread -- gotta go check that out. :thumbsup2

Yup on the planning, you got it covered! Because WDW is so big -- what park(s) you are going to on a particular day determines everything else. So you have to plan that ahead of time to make dining and fastpass reservations. I liked the crowd calendars on EasyWDW, and his touring plans too.

The good thing, or bad depending on how you look at it, is that we probably won't be doing too much park time. We don't want to overdo it before the Half, and then we have a few CM's who left us at DLR to go back to WDW that we want to visit with. I think the only thing we know for sure right now is that Sunday will be dedicated to Epcot and drinking around the world ;) I'm going back in January 2017 and plan on making that one all about getting to see as much as I can. I'm hoping to go have brunch with my friend on Monday so we can pin down what things we absolutely want to do and then work from there.

It's Official, It's Official!

Well, today was the big day. March 17, 2015. The first big date I had circled on my calendar for this trip. No, I am not referring to St. Patrick's Day (although that was something to look forward to in itself), but rather ...

That is right, today was the day I could finally register for the Wine & Dine Half Marathon! Rather an important day, considering the entire reason for this runCation from the beginning has been this event. If my friend and I could not get registered everything would have to be cancelled and I would have to try again in January 2017 when I finally think I will be (somewhat) mentally prepared for my very first full marathon.

But that is getting ahead of myself!

It always seems like each and every runDisney event is getting harder and harder to get into. Races that used to take days to sell out started to take mere hours, and now it seems as though if you are not ready to register the moment it opens you will be on the outside looking in. Recent races have sold out in roughly 30 minutes or less. I think it is safe to say registration is a literal feeding frenzy of activity. Everyone out there has their theories, and the speculation for today was that a few factors would play into how fast the Half would fill up:

1. It's the only night race, meaning a different atmosphere and a big draw for some people
2. The cancellation of the Tower of Terror 10 Miler (rumored to be returning in the future, but also rumored to be gone for good)
3. Runners wanting a re-do after foul weather in 2014
4. The last Half of the calendar year, which means the last chance to earn your Coast 2 Coast medal

I myself, however, believe the real reason to be far more simpler: word of mouth makes the demand that much higher. For example, I cannot even count how many people I have introduced to runDisney since I ran my first event back in 2012. From family members, to friends, and to co-workers I have seen many people with my own two eyes register for these events who had never even heard of them before they saw something I posted on Facebook or mentioned in a conversation that I was doing. I myself was even introduced to runDisney by a friend and had never even heard about it before. More an more people are finding out about these Disney running series and are trying to register, and then sharing with their friends. And then of course we all share stories about how registration can be and so more and more people are trying to register first thing. Events are going to sell out, and they are going to sell out fast. There is no way around it.

The best runDisney can do is try to add new events for us, which they have successfully been doing for the past few years: Tinker Bell Half, Disneyland 10K and Dumbo Double Dare, Tinker Bell 10K and Pixie Dust Challenge, Avengers Half, Star Wars Half, Star Wars 10K and Rebel Challenge, and now a new Half Marathon coming for Disneyland Paris. More and more events are being added as more and more people are demanding them. Too bad the demand still far outweighs the supply.

But back to registration day!

This is not my first runDisney registration day rodeo (try saying that ten times fast) so I have to admit I have a system that has not let me down yet. The plan was to be ready and at my laptop well before the official start of registration at 9:00 am PST (seeing as I am on the West Coast), have my CC information copied to my clipboard, a straight link to the registration page (runDisney's page has a history of crashing, and thankfully I had a little help in finding this - you know who you are, thank you), and be prepared to keep refreshing!

The page went live somewhere around 8:54-8:55 and I was filling everything out as fast as I could. I was a little frustrated because I just got a new laptop and the font sizes are so much smaller on webpages than I am used to, so making sure I was filling out the right information was a challenge and I had to resubmit a few times. Boy, was I nervous! But for no reason at all. When I finally submitted for real, and my payment was processed I was officially registered before 9:00 am!

I am in! I am in!

Then I had to wait anxiously to make sure my running companion was able to get in as well. I could not imagine any reason why she would be on the outside looking in when she had the same exact link that I did, but I still needed official confirmation. Can I just say I cheered out loud when she texted me moments after I finished my registration that she was in? Because I did. I definitely did.

Now the real planning begins and I have already circled a couple more dates on my calendar: One for ADR's on May 9, one for FP+ selection on September 6 (just before I leave for my birthday vacation).

Stay tuned for more!

So frustrated. Last year DD and I both signed up for email notification from Run Disney when the Wine and Dine half marathon registration opened and neither of us ever got an email. This year we looked up the registration date and were ready. DD got online at 11:55 am ET and was not permitted to register since it wasn't officially open yet. She had a meeting at work and was not able to try again until 12:30. By the time she entered all her information the race was full and she was denied registering.

DD has not had this problem anywhere else. She is a great runner and has run many races including this year's Boston Marathon. Guess we won't be going to any runs at Disney.

Hopefully in the future if she decides to try again she'll get in. It's just an unfortunate fact that if you are not on to register right when it opens, you probably won't get in. So stinking popular! A suggestion is always to see if someone is willing to register for her if she happens to be busy during the time it opens. I have definitely learned to request registration days off if I possibly can. My whole life gets scheduled around them, it's kind of horrible.

I doubt DD will try again a third time. As for taking a day off, she runs in marathons all over the east coast and uses the few vacation days she has for those. Can't waste a vacation day just waiting to register for a race and hope to get in. Plus her husband is in the military and again, has limited vacation days (none if he is deployed). It seems that Run Disney is more interested in AP holders and DVC members than the casual Disney visitor.

I've been wanting to go back to Disney since I went in 2011 with DD. The compromise was she would go run and I would go with her. It was suppose to be my Christmas gift this year. Hopefully we will get back to Disney some year but it won't be any time soon :(

DVC & AP only get 10% of the spots for early registration. Those sold out quicker than the open registration.

I wouldn't be shocked if Disney ends up going lottery based within the next few years.

If she really, really wants to do it one other thing I can suggest is to look into Travel Agents and Charities who have bibs. Unfortunately from what I was hearing yesterday, most of them are sold out as well, but I have been told they have wait lists in case people drop out, can't meet fundraising goals, etc. Registration Day isn't exactly the be all and end all.

AP and DVC registration unfortunately doesn't really impact the general registration. The number of spots they sell early is so small, it would probably only mean a difference of minutes when actual registration rolls around if they weren't held, all it would do is increase the number of people registering all at once, and that number is already stressing the system as it is. And I'm no AP or DVC member myself, so I have to cross my fingers and hope for the best along with everyone else.

Well I still hope you both can find a way in, and not think of runDisney with jaded eyes. They put on really great events, especially for Disney fans. There is just no way to guarantee everyone a spot in who wants in. And I know I'll be sad for the day it's completely left up to chance and they do a lottery system, because I can see it happening. They are just so darn popular! One last thing I would recommend is dropping in on the WISH board where we have the huge threads for each event. We always post lots of tips for ways to make registration easier in the hopes we can all get in.

I am sorry for the bad experience, I am, and if you both decide to move on from runDisney events, that's your choice. But it doesn't mean there is no chance for you, ever. Just start talking with other people who participate more often and get to know the system a little better.

And this is all I'm going to say on the matter in my PTR. It's really put a damper on my excitement from yesterday. If you need to vent about it more or are interested in chatting with people who have been involved with runDisney for a long time and could have advice for you in the future outside of what I've already mentioned, please check out the WISH and Events/Competition board.

Most likely DD will no longer try to run at events sponsored by Run Disney. She is a competitive runner and has been for ten years. Her goal was to be one of the top five finishers. She's participated in tons of half/full marathons and never had the issues with registering that she has had at Run Disney. DD tries to run a marathon every month, so she has lots of experience with registering for races and never had problems with other venues. There are many other places for her to run without the hassle she has had trying to register at a Run Disney event. She has shared her experiences on her running blog so that others know what to expect. I feel badly for our friend who was able to register after being on hold for 20 minutes - now she is stuck running a race by herself since DD was going to be her traveling companion. My last comment on this whole situation is how disappointing this experience has been - DD, a friend, and I all signed up for email notification with Run Disney to tell us when race registration opened. DD and I never got any email notification. Our friend received an email this morning - almost 24 hours after the race registration was full. Signing up for email notification was worthless. Good luck to all those who were able to get a spot in the run.

Best of luck to DD running in the Boston Marathon next month.

Sweet! One less person competing for those Dopey spots next month. :) :) (just kidding)

This is not an issue specific to Disney. Most of the well-run and popular races around the world sell out fast or sold out fast before switching to a lottery. Personally, I'd rather take a shot at signing myself up than drop my name into a lottery hat. It's really not that hard to do it myself or to find a friend that can register for me. Surely your daughter has a friend or relative that can make themselves free for 10-15 minutes in order to sign her up.

Looking forward to stalking your trip report as I plan mine! And actually train for the race. meh. lol.

It is crazy how popular they are now. The year of the 1st Tink, my girlfriends and I decided during the summer we would try for coast to coast with the Wine and Dine... and yeah there I was in *July*, registering with no problem. I think it was 60% full or something. :rolleyes1

(Then we had that dramatic blow-up, wine and dine plans cancelled, sold my bib - face value, I'm no shark - this was back when you could sell a bib fairly easily even though it was frowned upon by RunDisney shhhhh.....)
