I just wanted to warn everyone to be careful with your signatures! I had no clue that I was "breaking the rules", and in the past had been careful to abide by them, but just received a warning concerning my siggie. I felt so horrible for having unknowingly done so, so I'm passing on the guideline link that was sent to me:

Signature Guidelines

I got one a few weeks too. I HAD NO CLUE iwas in the wrong either. It kind of made me mad, like the monerator had nothing to do that night so looked on her board for violaters. My picture was only slightly too big I found out, and it was the same size as I see alot of them on here, so I never even thought it was wrong. I made mine much smaller now. But I see so many people how are in violation ten times over and still keep theres up.!

Yeah, I just guess we got "caught"! ;) Didn't it make you feel like the worst person in the world to receive that pm? I felt like I was going to the principal's office! :lmao: :rotfl2:

Just by way of explanation.. overly large signatures cause a few problems...

1) They slow down the loading of a page when a user is reading a thread..

2) They can affect the overall performance of the DISboards sometimes in 'heavy traffic' times. The SIGnature is dynamically applied to each post you make. So when you open a thread, each SIG is loaded from a database for each user. This is what allows you to change your SIG .. and like magic all the old posts you have show your new signature. But when the SIGs are too big, (either length wise or image size or whatever) ... that can gum up the works.

The guidelines for signatures are not arbitrary.. but rather have been set up so that you can express yourself sure.. but also so that provided you are within those guidelines.. it will minimize the likelihood of YOUR signature gumming up the works.

As mods.. we try to alert people to the situation and request corrective action when we see something that needs correcting. That said, we each only have two eyes.. so we can't see absolutely everything. If you see what appears to be a really gross-offender ... wayy way long .. or too many pictures.. or pictures that are re-donk-ulously too big, you can use the exclamation point in the triangle beside each post to report the post as violating SIG guidelines. The mods will then take a look and see if corrective action is required.

To alert users : A number of the message boards across the DIS have posted stickies at the top of the board reminding users to check the SIG guidelines and ensure they are in compliance. (including this one) Unfortunately -- and I am guilty of this as well -- we all tend not to see those stickies sometimes.. in our rush to read the newest posts.

Thanks for your understanding...

Knox

There have been many warnings ASKING everyone to check their signatures without having to be singled out. :confused3
The moderators are doing what is necessary to make sure the boards can continue to run as efficiently as possible. This should not be seen as a discipline or attack on any one person, but rather a guideline that we must abide by to have such a fantastic site that we ALL like to visit. IMHO
Basically don't take it personally and just adjust your siggies so we can continue to enjoy the Dis-Boards which is what we are all here for ultimately. Sorry if I have stepped on anyones toes with this post.

In my defense, the guidelines are written in terms I don't understand. I have no clue how many pixles a picutre is, nor did I have a clue how to find out. I set my picture at the website size on photobucket, which you would think would be the size allowed, but it's not. It is VERY SLIGHTLY too big. I have seen a ton of pictures on this site that size, so i never knew it was wrong. So I guess that is what ticked me off the most. Those people still can use those sizes of picutres, but I had mine up 1 day and was given a warning.
Plus people that name each kid and then have a smilie of some sort next to it. According to the rules as I understood them, you can only have a total of 3 smilies. So all those people are breaking the rule as well.
I could care less how many smilies one has, but I just think everyone should be looked at. The same board I was caught on has many other "offenders".

The Signature Guidelines apply to everyone. While the mods on every board do a great job of following what is posted on their respective forums, there are some posts that can escape their sharp eyes. It is not as if anyone is being singled out or favored by the mods. Note that DIS smilies are not considered to be separate images, but using a smilie from another location is.

If you see a signature or post that you feel is in violation of any of the Signature or Posting Guidelines, please feel free to use the little triangle with an exclamation point in the bottom left corner of the offending post. This will alert the moderators for that particular board and they can take the appropriate steps.

If you have any questions about whether your signature falls within the "legal limits", just ask on the Tech Support Board. They can tell you for certain whether you're okay or will need to make adjustments. And they can walk you thru the steps on how to make those adjustments, if you need help.

If you want to check the size of an image in your signature, just right click on it and then choose "Properties" from the dropdown menu. A window will open up that displays the file type, web address, size and dimensions of the image. Image sizes are dsiplayed in width x height. File sizes are in bytes (not KB).

I hope this and the explanation provided by Knox will help clear things up for anyone who might be unclear about what is an allowable signature.

I actually have posted several things in the tech board, and almost NEVER get an answer, the ones I do are from people who are making a guess. I don't think it is moderated or there is actaully someone who knows anything there that helps. I mean, some people have helped me ,but alot have only made guesses, and I even asked for a moderatoer one time ,and not one replied!

The signature rules was not the same as the ones I was told to look at. The ones I looked at were VERY recent. (I was told things were changed this Jan.)

DISboard Smilies do not count toward images, only smilies from other websites like Smiley central etc - like those in my signature.
