Be aware of palmetto bugs in the animal kingdom boma rooms

yes, please what is considered a boma room location. I have a standard club level, if my DD see's one of the P, she is more sissy than me, we will be out, do they tend to show up more, this time of the year?

Wow. We had an infestation of ghost ants in a WL room and never got offered anything but moving to another room. And it was an "offer" from the exterminator that came as opposed to a manager saying "We'll move you to another room. Sorry about that." ugh First impressions say a lot though. No matter how nice a place is. We saw a palmetto on our first night staying off site on 1994 on our first trip to WDW. Well, shall I say that since then, we've never stayed off-site. It was just a sign to us. Perhaps the KAL isn't for the OP. My bet is they said "Boma" and meant "Jambo". Bugs do happen everywhere in the South though. I'm GALD to live in the north where they aren't the size to carry away small children and pets!

I'm sorry to hear of the Palmetto bug infestation. That is unacceptable; I would have raised you know what with the front desk manager if I was not offered an acceptable compensation.

That being said, it is Florida. We have Palmetto bugs all over the South, especially in summer. It isn't uncommon to be walking down the street at night here in Atlanta and see (and hear!) them running up and down the sidewalks and retaining walls. It's definitely freaky the first few times you see them, but you get used to it.

However, there is a standard for public buildings. Exterminators should be routinely spraying EVERY inch of baseboard, crown molding, outdoor perimeter, deck area, etc. I find this simply unacceptable, especially in areas where Palmettos are known to live.

I was in Mumbai (India) once and left a plate of room service food on the desk in my hotel room. I was sleeping when I woke to clicking sounds. They were covering the plate, but as soon as I turned on the light, they scattered. They are like termites in that they do not do well in light.

The hotel offered a free night's stay, which was very good, considering it was over $500/night for the room. A few months later this hotel (The Taj) was bombed in a terrorist attack, so I guess it could have been worse...

Just to clarify for those who've asked....there are no "Boma" rooms at AKL. There are rooms in Jambo House and Kidani Village at AKL, and I'm sure the OP meant one of those.

Boma is the name of a restaurant in the Jambo House building.

As for the Palmetto bugs....yes, in a perfect world, there would be none in a hotel room, ever. But no matter how much they spray, there are always going to be bugs outside. And once in awhile, they're going to fly into a building when a door opens, or hitch a ride in on someone's clothing. Even if exterminators properly treat the room, that doesn't mean that every insect that makes its way into the room drops dead instantly or disappears.

The same warm climate that draws millions of tourists to FL makes it very hospitable to all kinds of critters that you wouldn't necessarily run into at home. No matter how much you spray, you can't erase nature. And FL is pretty nature-intensive. It's all part of the deal....you want to vacation in a sorta-tropical climate, you're gonna run into sorta-tropical creatures. :)

I wish I had $75 for every "palmetto" bug inside my home last year...I could finance a trip to WDW:rotfl:

I have lived in the south all of my life...Charleston, SC up until this past June. Yes, an occasional Palmetto bug is a way of life, however having to kill several in 2 days would make me very upset as well. That is a bit ridiculous!
I've lived in SC for most of my life, and I DESPISE those things! They freak me out! We try to keep the "numbers" down by exterminating often and closing doors when we come from outside. But whenever I do see one, I make my husband kill it..... after I finish my panic attack!

(and to the PP in ATL, I HATE when you can hear those things on the sidewalk at night!!)

just a warning..there are mice in the Parks too. ;)
I heard he's big a wears red pants.

---------------------------------------------------------
Now I need to google what a palmetto bug looks like. Them suckers just freeze here.

I live in TX and the first time I saw one I came UNGLUED! Freaky, prehistoric monsters!

I still hate them and will try to get someone else to deal with it, but I also understand that we're stuck with them. Since it has turned cooler, I'm finding more in the house (the back door is always open and the screen has been demolished by dogs and kids) looking for some warmth, I guess. They also come down the chimney. They WILL find a way in and then they go belly up from the insecticides.

I'll be at AKL in 8 days. I need to know what the BOMA rooms are. Please explain. Thanks.
Meant the Jamba rooms...before going to AKL go to home depot buy a four pack of glue traps and place two of them behind the toilet, one on each side along the wall...this way they wont be running around as that's were I killed them as my kids freaked out...regards...

Meant the Jambo rooms...bring some glue traps and place them behind the toilet to be safe...it's less scary if they're not running around...they appeared around 11pm-1am at night...

Meant the Jambo House rooms...it's just that we hold Disney in high regard and having to kill giant palmetto bugs was disappointing (and scary)...

Be glad you got the 75 dollars. I don't care what anyone says. To paraphrase Field of Dreams.."If you build it (WDW) in a warm climate, they will come" Back when we were on a Ghost Tour in Savannah, GA we walked through a back alley that had hundreds of Palmetto bugs or maybe just plain cockroaches (These suckers were HUGE) covering a walkway. I knew we were in their natural habitat so it didn't bother me as much (except the phobia of them crawling on my feet, i had flip flops on). I wouldn't have asked for money back regardless.

I had to google Palmetto bugs since I have never heard of them. Sure enough, they are the same bugs that we saw just a few weeks back while waiting for Illuminations. Freaked my DH right out :rotfl:

I assumed what we saw were mutant roaches - I have seen roaches before but not that big (these were the size of my palm). Gross :crazy2: Funny that they are considered common in the south. I have never seen one before this trip. I wonder if it is because we usually travel to WDW in September and October when it is hotter and more humid?

My former high school was built on a old garbage dump. We used to freak out early in the morning when the giant roaches would crawl out of the floor drains in the bathrooms!!!!

actually hot and humid is what they like, you were just lucky.

Wow, i am really suprised disney gave a credit for that. That is really good service. People should expect to maybe she a roach/ palmetto bug. You are in florida. The biggest location for them. You never get over them, and they are the type of bug you cannot get rid of. Living in florida i still freak out when i see one, but just squash it and move on.

I get my house sprayed yearly, and it never fails they always make it through. Like everyone says, roaches and palmetto bugs would be a survive a atomic bomb....:scared1:
