Well...Ive worked my last mardi gras shift and have the burning sensation in my pocket (no, not THAT burning sensation).... GC owners....help me!!

Should I get a gas or electric cart? Why?
If electric, 36v or 48v? Why?
If gas, baffles for muffler? How quiet can they really be?
Whats your preferred make? ClubCar, EZ-GO,Yamaha, Star, ParCar? Why?

When you figure this one out let me know. We tried like crazy to get one before we left, but only have 2+ weeks to go, and haven't found one cheap enough. Glad your gonna have some down time. I was wondering if you want to write a little article/thingy whatever for my webpage/newsletter. It won't start for a while, but I think your squewed take on things would be amazing. If I can get this thing going, maybe we can score some free camping etc from it.

Talk to you later

John

Okay Rog....

Here's my take on it & I'm sure Tungpo1 will also give you some sage advice!

First - Battery & not gas. Why??? Less parts to break down, you only need an electrical outlet to recharge, and you don't have to carry extra gas. (The methane produced from too many burritos will not work in a gas cart!)

Also, very quiet (obviously) so you can sneak up on Gatordad, FtWGuy, Al, and others & steal their kungaloosh and/or beer! 48V - cause you can get special gear kits to make it go faster! (or 72V if you can find it).

Our preference is Club Car. Why? After researching all brands, DH's order of preference is (1) Club Car (2) Yamaha (3) E-Z Go - or he calls it Sleazy Go. There are a LOT of neat after-market kits you can get to customize your Club Car that are not available in other brands.

The Club Car we had before we got the GEM was a 48V which we bought used from a golf club for $850 back in 1996 or 7. Rick totally customized it (spent way too much time and $$ - but I loved it!) After we sold it when we bought the GEM, I immediately regretted my decision. I miss my cart - but I do get to see it scooting around our neighborhood. <sniff>

Happy Shrove Tuesday - stay away from all the crazy's out there - or - if you can't do that, be crazier than they are!!!

Deb

John, I would LOVE to.

Deb, ya know, I never though about club car having more custom options GREAT POINT
What do ya think about that Precident model?

Oh...dont worry, I dont go anywhere near parades or any kind of mardi gras celebrations....I get enough of it at work. And if Im not getting payed to put up with that madness....I aint puttin up with it. So glad its over.

Ok, I'm going to confess a secret here that many don't know. I'm one of those damn politicians. Campaign time I use golf carts for working the neighborhoods since walking is not an option for an old guy with two plates in the leg and 15 screws. The place I rent my golf cart from has them all and this is what I have learned. I like electric better than gas. For some reason they seem to have more power when stock. The owner of the golf cart place said the 36 volt is less problems than the 48 volt. The reason I asked was that I was considering buying a used one. The best deal is when they trade out units from a golf course. I should have bought one a couple of years ago when he had two year old models for $1200.

Well Rog I say you got to go GAS. I stayed at FW for 14 days we drove our cart every day alot only used half a tank (1 tank is 6 gal.) I doubt that any elec. cart was able to go 14 days on a single charge. From my understanding a elec. cart can only go for about 20 to 25 miles on a charge. A gas goes alot more. Plus the more weight on a elec. cart the less time it will last. Who wants to wait hours for a cart to charge when you can pour in a can of gas in about a minute. We drive our cart every day through the neighborhood and I only put gas in it every other month and its never empty. My cart is a 1996 YAMAHA G16A The only thing that has been replaced is the coil, belts and spark plug. When ever you have to replace batteries on a elec. cart you are looking around $600. Plus it is easier to take a can of gas with you than electricity. Ez-go and Club Car have a few more after market options. But there is plenty for YAMAHA. (they are the only cart that makes there own gas motor)Par car has no after market options really. On a yamaha gas you can bypass the governor with a tywrap and go from 12 mph to 27 mph in as long as it takes to use a tywrap. I put a 7" lift on mine with 22x11x10 inch tires could have went taller but stayed low an wide for stability. With steel wheels tires and lift I spent around $700 plus the cart. Did all the work myself. Any questions just type;) .

Okay Rog....

Deb

An impossibility. I am ever vigilant, despite being under the influence, not to mention extremely dangerous when my property is threatened.

Here's an idea. Just buy a taser -- then you have your choice of carts.

If you remember correctly those sneaky otters tried that in December. There are now 3 fewer otters in FW! No one takes my beer!

So BDR have you got a idea of what you want yet.

I would go with a gas cart and toss a nice Honda CRF 450 motor in it 4 stroke cheap on gas and will go like hell. One of my buddies did this with his and man that thing was fast about 60MPH without a problem.

We have a gas Yamaha. Bought it for $500.00 from a golf course that was changing ownership. Just happened to contact every golf course in the two counties I was interested in traveling to in order to pick up one. New owner told us to wait until the end of the season, as he was planing on replacing the carts. Gave us a price over the phone. We did go and check the carts out in August, but had to wait until October to bring it home. In any event..in October, he knew he had priced it too low(but he more than made up for it on the all the others sold!) He did honor the price he originally quoted us..and we were actually pleasantly surprised by that.;) We took it home to Long Island that winter(we have a seasonal site in an upstate NY campground). My husband had it painted(we have a collision repair shop) and had a rear seat, windshield, , new woodgrain dash and matching steering wheel, hub caps, mirrors, graphics and even a CD player installed. The guys loved working on it..I don't think they wanted to give it back to me!:cutie:
We used it all season last summer...from May to October...and we filled the gas tank up only once. We did have to replace the battery, but otherwise mechanically it was in good shape, and we've had no problems with it.

Well....Im almost positive I want a club car due to the aluminum frame vs ezgo & yami's steel frame. Still undecided on gas vs electric...but leaning towards electric for noise reasons and lower maintenance. I guess Im just gonna hit a few local deales and feel out some prices in the next few days.

Pete...I checked that site...didnt call because they are already closed. What, if its not too rude to ask, did you pay for yours? Is yours gas or electric? Happy with it?

Auntie...I called several golf clubs as well...earliest sale wont be till the end of summer...prices were really good, but too far away.

I did a search and e-mailed every club in the areas I was interested in traveling too. Eventually one e-mailed back, and we were lucky it was with in 10 miles of where we were located. We had to wait until the end of the season (which was October)..but at that point, I figured for the price we were paying..I was willing to wait.;) I did contact two dealers in the area..and they were four and sometimes five times the price for the same used cart. Although, they did offer a one year warranty on them. Being that we are in the business, and the price was right..,a warranty wasn't an issue. Also found out that a good many of the courses actually lease their carts, don't own them outright. I didn't realize that.

When I said too far away...I meant time wise...I'm willing to travel over 600miles for the right price/right cart.

Us too.. we wanted it for our campging season(which was pretty much Memorial Day to Columbus Day) ..but figured for the price we were paying we were okay with waiting until the end of October.;) My husband had the winter to prepare for the following season. Worked out well for us. I can understand with it being only February, you would want it sooner than August.;) Hopefully something will come your way soon.:thumbsup2

A guy in biloxi offered me THIS for $2000, which is RIGHT in my range, and he's only about an hour away. I may take him up on it although I really wanted a club car because I like the body better than the body of ezgo, plus as DES1954 mentioned about the aluminum frame vs steel. And I really dont care for the yellow...but thats just a can of paint away from my "black goes with everything", and "everything looks better when its on fire" theories. It also needs rear lights, and Im assuming the batteries are on there last legs. But for 2Gs....I might bite the bullet, Im waiting on word from a guy in Odessa, FL about a price on what Im actually looking for...we'll see how things turn out.

Hi Rog!!!

Battery replacement....hmmmmm..... when we bought our Club Car it had already seen 3 years of use on a public golf course. We were told that the batteries were one year old & like I said before, that was in 1996/7. We replaced those batteries in the fall of 2006. (Ten to 11 years use??) Yeah, it did cost $600 to replace them - but - aside from all the customizing Rick did, that was the only "maintenance" money we put into it.

Don't be concerned with the tail-lights not working or the color. If I know you, you'll be searching on-line for customized bodies, seats, lights, dash-board, drink holders, and all the other extra goodies. Your original low investment can turn into big $$$$'s in a hurry!!! If I can find some, (or maybe Al has some) I will post pictures of our before and after cart. You will be amazed!! Like I said before, I regret now that I sold it. The body Rick put on it was made by a company in California who was bought out by club car - and then club car would not sell that body style!?! You asked about a Precedent??? If I were to buy another one today, that would be the one I would choose. (Of course, we'd have to customize that too!!:thumbsup2 )
