My son will turn one tomorrow, and I was wondering if anyone knew how to make a cake for one? I know this sounds weird, but we arent really a big cake family and my daughter just had a bday on Friday, so we are all caked out. However, I want him to have his fun with his cake.

Any recipes or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What equipment do have?

Basically, you can do a box mix and just bake one layer. You could also go and buy a small Wilton cake pan in the shape of a heart or whatever they have and make a small cake. Bottom line, though, you will probably have to make enough batter for a normal sized cake.

Or you could go to the grocery store and buy a small cake.

Don't have a recipe for you, but I do know that our local bakeries have small cakes especially for this purpose. The one I saw recently was $4.95 and it was decorated for a 1 year old. It's small enough for them to play in it, but not big enough to make a huge mess. You might also try your local grocery store (if they have a bakery). Sometimes they will make one for you for this purpose too. Good luck and Congrats on your little one's 1st B-day!!!

What about cupcakes?

BTW... my DD's birthday is tomorrow too.:thumbsup2

I would just go to a local bakery and buy him a cool cupcake.

I agree... Even some Grocery Stores have Really Cute sesamestreet characters and things..

Happy Birthday to your Son !! and belated to your Daughter...

my DM always made a tiered cake for our kids 1st birthday. She would make a bottom layer for the family and then a small top layer for the bday child. It was always fun to see their faces with that big cake in front of them!

In our house Bday "cakes" are not necessarily cake. For me it is a cheesecake, DH Ice cream cakes, and the kids well it depends on the year  My mom gets a carroy cake so his "cake" could just be his favorite dessert with a candle in it. But, you can buy a single layer cake or mini cakes at most grocery stores or bakeries now. Even ice cream cakes come small enough for just a couple pieces now. ETA: Check with your local grocery stores - some do a free 1st birthday cake that is a single layer (so even if throw away most of it you won't feel as guilty about it)

If you want to bake him one....
you could go to the $1 store and pick up a couple of disposable pans in different sizes and bake a single layers yourself. Use all the batter by making the size you want for DS and a square one as well to freeze it for later use - company, making a trifle, etc. At the $1 store you can usually also find decorations for the top of the cake as well.

ETA: My DD4 has the easy bake oven and we used that to make my niece a birthday cake - small size. Here is a website for recipes for mini cakes - you could use a disposable pan or small pan you have vs. the easy bake ones. http://www.budget101.com/kids.htm#Easy_Bake_Mixes and http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/ubbs/archive/KIDS/Easy_Bake_Oven_Recipes_by_bme.html

I just bought a small cake for my DD's first birthday. It was $3 at WalMart!

She obviously had fun with it!

My grocery store sells individual pieces of birthday cake--like they took a big cake and cut it up. I'm always tempted to buy just one peice but so far I've been very good. :)

Seems to me that the little guy is getting cheated out of his first birthday cake. His birthday will always be 5 days after his sisters, so does that mean he will never get cake because you will be "caked out"?

I say get the little man a b-day cake and you eat it too. He only turns one once.

I'll be right back, I have to get my flame retardant suit.....

One of our local groceries sells smaller cakes just for this purpose. They are really cute too.

I'd go to the bakery and get him an oversized cupcake. Lots of grocery stores sell small cakes (I know here I can get them at Wegmans, Stop & Shop and Shoprite)

What a cutie!!! :goodvibes

I think that tiny cake would fit the bill nicely, especially if no one else really wants to eat cake.

I remember when my youngest sister was one. I think every 1-year old should have their own cake to mess around in!

I say make a cake. They're pretty cheap to make. I agree with you Cindy's Mom.

My girls' birthdays are less than a week apart. We have cupcakes on their real birthdays, and each gets a cake for their joint party. Yes, it is a lot of cake, and we do our best to share with everyone we can.

When the kids turned two and three, we had a Barbie party, and lots of cake. The day after the party we heard a thud in the ktichen. They had knocked the cake off the counter and were sitting on the floor, digging in to the leftover cake with their finger. They looked so cute it was hard to get mad, so I took pictures instead.

Sounds adorable. :goodvibes

The grocery stores around here give you a cake for you child's first birthday, free. I don't know if they could have it ready by tomorrow, but you could call and see.

Awww, that's sweet. Our local grocery stores aren't that generous but they do sell very small cakes in the bakery.
