Does anyone have and use bbq mats? What are your experiences?

I remember seeing a commercial a few years ago and thought the sounded like the best idea ever. Of course, commercials are supposed to make you want to buy the product. That’s the whole point lol

I found some that aren’t too expensive, but if still like to be sure they are worth it. All thoughts and opinions are welcome.

It would keep drips from whatever surface you have the grill on. More importantly in the charcoal world, keeps any embers that might fall out of the bottom off the wooden deck.

Bought one 4 years ago with the new grill, used it once...lol
Ah ha! I thought it was a mat to place under the grill for drips and such. Yeah, I remember a mat you put on the grate of your grill to cook on now. I don't know why you would do that. Seems to me it cancels the reason to cook food on a grill.

Could go either way, I guess. I'm not certain exactly what the OP was referencing but when I googled, both types of thing came up:
BBQ Grill Mat Set of 5, Non-Stick and Heat Resistant Mats Heavy Duty Reusable Easy to Clean for Charcoal, Electric and Gas Grill FDA-Approved, PFOA Free (Extended Warranty 5 Pack): Amazon.ca: Home & Kitchen
Uterstyle BBQ Gas Grill Splatter Mat, Fireproof Heat Resistant Gas or Electric Grill Splatter Mat Pad Floor Protective Rug for Backyard Outdoor Deck Patio Camping Fire Pit Blanket 36x36inch: Amazon.ca: Patio, Lawn & Garden

We’ve tried a couple different ones. My husband uses them for everything except steaks.

I have no clue about a mat you COOK ON, I also thought OPO meant mat that goes under your grill.

If that is the case, then yeah we have one.

I've never seen a mat that goes on the grill that you cook on - didn't know that was a thing!

I’ve seen the kind of mats the OP is speaking of just never used one probably because I didn’t see the point.

I’ve tried the mat you cook on and while it protected food from a dirty grill, I felt like my food (burgers) just fried in the melted fat…not good eats.

Sorry for the confusion. I was speaking of one you put on the grill and put the food on it. I’ve never heard of a mat that you put under a bbq.

That’s one thing I wondered about. If you scrape the mat off while you’re cooking and let it fall to the bottom of the bbq, it defeats the purpose.
