Battery trouble

I had a battery to blow up today and just wondered if anyone else ever had one to blow.

Yes. I had one blow in my parent's front yard. It was in my father's 300ZX and he ended up replacing the hood because of it. I thought we were both gonners!

When I was a teenager I worked at a auto parts store. A customer needed a battery changed so another guy went out to change it. When he put the wrench to it it blew. It had one of those plastic shields around it which saved the guy it kept most of the acid off of him. It was loud when it blew.

I haven't had one blow but 2 years ago we were at the fort and a TT pulled in 2 sites down from us and about 5 mins after he pluged in his blew up, like a bomb. Last year I had a battery that blew the breaker on my TT and I replaced it, it was fine then while at the fort a few weeks later we returned from a day at the parks and I smelled something like rotten eggs, I put my hand on the battery and it was quite hot. I let it cool down and pulled it out and took it to WalMart and had it tested. WalMart said it was bad and traded it out under warranty and $6. I believe it would have blown if I hadn't found it in time, I never had a problem after that with the new battery.

Loud is not the word for this thing. I have never heard anything that loud. I didn't get any acid on me, just a headache and some hurt ears. I had let my guard down since I was just going to crank the engine and BAM! I had a charger on it and was going to make sure it had charged. Well I charged it enough alright. Half of the top and the side charged right off. I wasn't laughing to begin with.

Many years ago I hooked cables up wrong and the battery blew. I never heard a bomb go off but I can imagine this thing was close. Luckily I had turned away to go crank the truck.

I've only had that happen once in my '96 Contour. I went to start the engine and BAM!!! Before this, I never even knew a battery could explode!

I had that happen in an M-60 tank once - very unusual experience. It was so louud I thought we had been hit!

Some of "our batteries" take alot more charging to get to the "blowing up" phase as the years pass!!

Years ago a friend of mine had skipped school to go 4-wheeling and probably a little partying. While on the dirt road to their favorite place they came across a guy wandering aimlessly down the road with his hands over his eyes.

You guessed it; the guy had also been 4-wheeling in his truck and the battery bracket had come loose. When he went to tighten in back down he slipped and crossed the wrench over both terminals. The only way he could find his way out was to keep walking along the dirt road going from side to side and feeling for the bushes. All turned out OK, although the guys who skipped school had some 'splaining to do on why they were out of school.

I think of that every time I go to take the batteries out of my trailer or jump start someone's car.
