My mother-in-law wants to stay in a savanna-view room at AKL for a week in January but we are having trouble getting an accessible 2-bedroom (I understand there are only a couple). She has some mobility issues, but inside the unit, the bathroom will be the only real challenge. She cannot step into a tub and needs support bars around the toilet. That's it.

We could bring a portable walker to solve the toilet issue, which would only leave us needing a shower stall instead of a tub. Not sure if there are non-HA units with those.

Suggestions?

All 2-bedroom villas at AKV Kidani Village will have a walk in shower in the master bath. At AKV Jambo House, the non-accessible 2-bedrooms will have a tub/shower combo.

The catch may be that a non-HA room will not typically have any grab bars around the toilet. A walker may not fit sufficiently well near the toilet to be safe.

Housekeeping does keep some mobility aids. We once got a raised toilet seat with attached grab bars like wings at the sides. Something like that may be available with a call to housekeeping.

To be assured of having something, you may want to look into off-site mobility aid rental agencies. Any that rent medical equipment may have something suitable.

This is why we book nearly a year in advance to be certain DH has the HA room type he does best with.

Thank you for starting this thread. We are in a similar situation. My husband is a bilateral amputee, wheelchair dependent. This will be our first time renting DVC. We hope to secure a reservation at AKL. It is vital that we have a Roll In Shower unit. We plan to travel with my DD, SIL, and grandson. We are hoping to rent a 2 Bedroom Roll In Shower unit. Are these available? What are our chances of securing this unit if we rent 11 months out? Also, are there any of these units available in the Value and/or Standard Category? The view is not that important to us.

Since you're renting, I wish you luck. Needing something that specific is probably pretty chancy depending upon time of year you're planning to go.

I'm not familiar with AKL, but VGF-original is quite small and has very few roll-in showers. We own there and book within a day or so of our booking window opening at 11 months to be assured of getting a roll-in shower.

There will be a few; there are at each resort. Owners needing a room-type this specific often book it for themselves at 11 months as we do. Thus, your renting chances could be quite slim.

I doubt that anyone can tell you what your chances are. There are too many variables.

I suggest consulting one of the rental brokers. They may be able to advise you more specifically than any of us can.

I hope I'm not giving you the wrong information, but it's my understanding that None of the DVC villas at Jambo are accessible, that if you need a HA villa, you need to stay at Kidani. Come to think of it, I was told that in relation to savannah view studios, not too sure about the other size villas. When I was first told that, I was so disappointed because I liked Jambo so much more. But I've come to like Kidani a lot better. Hope everything works out for you.
