Bathing Suits instead of Ponchos

As said before, it was our understanding swimsuits aren't allowed in the parks, so we never bother. But even on days when we go to AK and ride Kali, we just know we're going to get wet. It's part of the experience. We all laugh about walking around in wet clothes, but as long as it's not raining outside, we'll dry eventually. We don't use ponchos unless we have to, because they breathe as well as the skeletons in HM. If we do have to use them, we use the $1 WalMart ones, which work great.

At the end of a day where we get wet and/or sweat a lot, we just shower when we get home and all is better.

FWIW, I wore these Gap men's performance shorts for the first time yesterday, and I think they have potential (and there's an online sale on). They're mostly nylon, no liner, three pockets (unfortunately), and a modern length. I expect to mostly have a daypack for carrying ponchos and such, so I'll live with just the 3 pockets.

Stupid question. How about wearing normal brief under them? Is that ok? Here I am thinking about packing mainly these for DS. He doesnt really have many shorts but alot of swim shorts. Do kods at 11 have these "issues"??

My 9 year old complains of chafing. I notice he wears underwear with his bathing suit regularly now.

I can only speak in regards to mens suits:) I have to disagree to what I have read here about not being comfortable, because if you buy a quality suit they are very comfortable. I have a suit from LL Bean that looks like khaki shorts, that I can walk in all day long because they are so comfortable. I live in Florida and they dry super fast, humidity does not matter, and the mesh is very soft. I got these so that I can go from the swimming pool to the store etc. without needing to change and not looking like I am wearing a bathing suit.

I agree. I love men's swimwear that looks like shorts and made of fast dry material. Way better than cotton anything once it's wet. Damp underwear chafes worse than anything. And I can't stand ponchos, they are way too hot, so I use a compact umbrella and get somewhat wet for the rain or for water rides.

My boys have been wearing boxers, boxer briefs, or under armor under shorts under their bathing suits since age 8 or so (and it wasn't my idea). Only little boys go commando.

Quick wicking clothing works along this strategy. But it doesn't protect hair/make up.

I had my DS wear his suit with rash guard at US, for the water rides. After we did the water rides, we changed into dry clothes. He did not have an issue being uncomfortable, and we were walking around wet for an hour or 2. We have never worn swim suits for rain. I think the Disney ponchos are fine for rain, and if they rip, you can get a new one for free.

Did you cut out the liners? Wearing boxers with a suit that has a typical liner changes uncomfortable to very uncomfortable. Or were they wearing unlined, knee length board shorts?

I wouldn't recommend doing this with anything but synthetic underwear such as Underarmor, unless they're going to change out of them as soon as they're done swimming.

Something else that needs to be pointed out. Here in FL, we have a lot of sky-to-ground vertical lightening that makes it dangerous to continue walking around the park as if nothing is happening. Although the storms pass quickly, it is best to take cover during them so as not to make yourself a bulls eye.

Kids at that age have those very precise issues. Cut out the liner and have them wear boxer briefs. Otherwise, with just a wet liner and lots of walking, be prepared for crotch rot, aka chub rub, irrespective of size, unless of course you can train them to walk like a bow-legged cowboy all day.

Just about spit out my coffee. Thanks for the laugh!

How do you protect it from the sweat??? The heat??? Walking around the park all day in the heat *and I live here* will give me frizzies no matter what. I have pin straight hair too. Or do you mean just not getting hair wet?

When I was a FL resident I would wear board shorts to the parks all the time in the summer. I was never stopped. If I tried a Speedo instead perhaps it would be been a problem.

I was thinking the same thing, cotton briefs will take forever to dry and pretty uncomfortable until they do.

I can't think I have seen a trend where kids where underwear and trunks. They are more likely to go full commando instead. But, historically, I've always been more around the surf scene.

As to the overall topic, I prefer decent wicking clothes to swimwear. But, if it's not to obvious it's swimwear (bikini briefs or tops), I can't see it being an issue.

This is hilarious but I'm going to share something that is great for guys out there, since this subject has already come up. Ladies, your husbands may thank you if you order them a bottle of this, and yes it's a real product:

Which is what I said in a previous post, just a bit more delicately. ;)

Ask any guy how comfortable swim trunks are to walk around in for a long time.

Hint - they aren't and he will chafe and get sores in places he really doesn't want any.

All the guys in our group wear swim "shorts" all day every day at WDW in the warmer months. It's just shorts with netting and draw strings, and sandals. No problems ever. And we do 10 to 18 miles a day.

Wet socks and underwear? Nothing worse.

SOme of the best were sold at the Disney stores:
