Bathing Suits in the Parks

It isn't just walmart in louisiana..My Walmart in PA is the same on a weekend..lots of people shopping in Pjs and slippers..I don't get it at all

I'll never understand why Americans are so upset over girl's chests but not boy's. You are right other countries have different ideas and I'm sure this mom was from somewhere besides America.

First ,fair or not , right or wrong , Womans breasts are sexulaized in this country. Second , If you are visiting from another country, you should comply with the customs of that country.For example, I know while visiting Vatican City, no bare shoulders/no shorts or skirts above the knee.

Someone pointed out that you NEED to wear a swimsuit at a pool. So if you have a problem with you or your child seeing someone in a tiny swimsuit you can avoid the pool area. You don't NEED a swimsuit at a theme park, and it is not unrealistic to expect that you or your child will not have to see someone walking around in a tiny swimsuit in the park.

And there are a lot of swimsuits that provide tons of coverage, and don't look much like swimwear. However, it becomes a slippery slope if you we're to allow some swimwear and not others. I can hear it now - "it's discrimination to not allow me to wear my string bikini top, but you will let her wear her a rash guard." So it's easier to say no swimwear.

And as for Americans being too sensitive, there are countries that are less sensitive, and some that are more sensitive. If you are traveling to another country, it is your responsibility to conform to their standards, not the other way around. If I go to Saudi Arabia, I'm going to be covered head to toe so I don't get killed. If I go to the Vatican, I won't wear a tank top. I shouldn't expect an exception to be made for me.

I sort of agree. It's totally "inappropriate" for someone to walk out to their mailbox in pajamas but if they are outside in a bathing suit, that's fine. I think the point here is that humans are the only animals on the planet that have "standards". And even then, it varies from person to person. Person one - "bikini top bad!" Person 2 - "that's fine". I think that's all this poster meant.

I saw one guy on July 4th in a leotard. Let's just say you could tell very easily he was a male. Very easily. Extremely easily. Really easily if you can understand what I'm saying.

I walk to my mailbox in my pajamas all the time.

There are more options than just bathing suits to keep you cool.

For the boy, a bathing suit and t-shirt is no cooler than any other light fabric shorts and t-shirt.

For the girls, as other's have said, light colored, thin sundresses are great. ...or even thin light colored shorts and t-shirt.

No need for bathing suits in the park.

Don't know about your kids, but dd would rather wear athletic shorts and a light fabric shirt. The shorts dry in minutes and the shirt can be easily changed if need be (but she has several that dry as quick as the shorts).

It would be a lot easier to wear something that will dry quickly or you can quick change than having to strip out of a bathing suit and into other clothes.

Maybe I am not understanding but if you wear a swimsuit under your clothes in to AK, before Kali you will have to remove the outer clothes, ride in swimsuit and then change out of swimsuit into clothes after the ride?? In which case, you are still carrying undergarments around with you all day AND you are risking the chance of still having wet clothes if the CM's make you keep your shirts on. or were you going to wear a wet swim suit until it dries? Seems like too much sugar for a dime, as grandma used to say.

Disney even sells mens swim suits that look like regular shorts. I picked some up up at the BW-dried quickly just walking around.

I don't understand this thread.

1) You're going in August. It's going to be hot. Your clothes will dry in a matter of minutes.

2) YOU'RE GOING IN AUGUST. You'll enjoy having wet clothes for a few minutes.

3) If you're worried about shoes getting wet and staying wet (a valid concern), take them off and put on sandals, and store the shoes in the lockers or in the middle of the raft on Kali.

4) If you put clothes on over a bathing suit, no one will ever know.

5) YOU'RE GOING IN AUGUST.

I'm not convinced that you've spent time in Florida in August. You'll have wet clothes on within minutes of stepping outside without ever getting on a wet ride and stay that way all day.

If I were going to Disney during the summer (especially if I were riding wet rides) I would wear board shorts made to fast dry, a rash guard shirt, a wide brim hat, quick drying open shoes and use BodyGlide or Gold Bond Friction Defense as religiously as I use sunscreen.

Now that I think about it I may do this when I go in October.

If you think there is any chance of you getting wet at WDW, don't wear denim. That's all you need to know.

As pretty much everyone agrees, Disney says no swimsuits. When we go to a theme park on which my kids or I MIGHT go on water rides, we wear t shirts and shorts, either sport type shorts or the kind that are cotton (tshirt) material. Either dry quickly and aren't uncomfortable while damp vs denim which takes eternities to dry and is majorly uncomfortable with even slight dampness. Do I personally have a problem if children are wearing swimwear? Nope, in some cases their tank tops cover less than the swimwear. But not my call.

Here in Missouri, we run towards the clothing several sizes too small vs PJ's. Walmartian styles for everyone!!

OP, Another vote for dry fit running clothes. They are awesome. Light weight and they dry as fast as anything.

Since when? First thing I do every morning is stagger outside in my pjs and empty the dog. Then I collect the paper, and wave blearily at my other pj-wearing neighbours.

I've been known to go to the corner store in my pjs...

On a fairly recent trip I was mortified to see a Mom walk past me with her BOY AND GIRL, both approximately 10-11 years old with nothing on but shorts and hats! Aside from breaking the no shirt rule - this was a tween GIRL half naked! I know that other countries may have different ideas regarding nudity but here it's not okay to have a young girl exposing her private area. I kept waiting for CMs to come running, but until they were out of sight I saw no one.

What "private area"? The mother probably felt that there was no need to pretend she has something to hide, before she actually did.

The US used to be a lot more relaxed about this kind of thing. I remember back in the very early seventies, the authorities on the Jersey shore mandated bathing suits for ALL people, regardless of age. My mother had to buy me a bathing suit, as before that all us little kids played nude on the beach. My mom was outraged about it and accused them of trying to "sexualize" us, by acting as if we had anything to hide. She felt there was nothing more offensive than a bikini on a toddler. To her, it was like trying to paste breasts on a baby.

To be fair to the mom, the little girl had no breasts. And she may simply have not known the US customs. My mom was humiliated once because back in the sixties she wore a brand new suit to the Vatican with three quarter sleeves and lovely white gloves (think Jackie O)... and her wrists were showing! A priest smacked her across the wrists very hard and made her go back and change, and all her family were angry at her, even though they didn't know it wasn't allowed either.

If you see something like this, simply point it out to a cast member and let them communicate the standards nicely.

OP, Another vote for dry fit running clothes. They are awesome. Light weight and they dry as fast as anything.

DS12 and DH pretty much live in Dry Fit running clothes all summer (we're in WI, so hot and humid, but not AS humid as FL.) DD8 and I decided to see what the fuss is all about and bought our own. LOVE THEM!!! We all just stocked up for our upcoming trip (19 days! ) Even in the humidity, they dry quickly (well much quicker than other material anyway) AND if you get they're moisture-wicking, they help you to not feel as sweaty and keep the sweaty material from clinging to you. Love our moisture-wicking dry fit clothing!!

Athleta makes some really cute dresses made of bathing suit material. They are adorable and dry in a flash. I wear them on days when I might get wet.

As for kids in suits, I have never allowed mine to romp around in just bathing suits when we are at Disney, unless we are at a water park, and even then they wear board shorts and rash guards. There a lot of quick dry options for kids so they don't have to run around in bathing suits only. I always shake my head at people when I see kids running around grocery stores and places that are not pools in bathing suits. A parent would never allow them to wear to their underpants only in public. Why is spandex material somehow different or more appropriate?! It isn't. I appreciate that Disney is so consistent with their dress code. It's a family place and if just bathing suits were allowed for adults I cringe to think of the get ups we'd see.

I also don't let my kids sit their wet behinds down on rides that are not water rides. That is just something that irks me personally. I get so mad when I go to sit down and my rear end gets wet b/c someone let their sopping wet kid onto a ride. It's just rude.

This is actually a REALLY good point!

I once made the mistake of wearing a bathing suit under my uniform for a few days during basic training. I thought I was being terribly clever, because I could just whip off my uniform and jump right into the lake as soon as we were dismissed for the day.

Turned I wasn't so clever after all. Didn't get a yeast infection, fortunately, but I ended up with what was essentially a nasty case of diaper rash. It was horribly embarrassing, especially when the very amused young (male!) medic who examined my rear explained that the only treatment was cotton undies and baby powder.

He tried to be nice and say that I wasn't the only girl who'd done it to herself, but it didn't help.

That's my point exactly. You think it's fine, your neighbors think it's fine but I know tons of people who would be horrified to see that. My in-laws would never do that, my mother would be on the phone telling the neighbors that so-and-so was outside in their pajamas. For some, it works, for others, it doesn't. Same thing with bathing suits. Some don't care what others wear and some are just "disgusted " (and yes, that word has been used in other threads) when men wear Speedos and women/girls wear teeny-tiny bikinis at the pool.

It's ALL subjective.

But, getting back to the OP's question - Disney might look the other way at bathing suits but they more than likely won't. So I wouldn't attempt it. Lots of good suggestions here for how to avoid that.
