So our 8 year old son has started playing baseball, and we live in the land of hockey. We don't even have minor league baseball in our city anymore. The only major league team is across the country. We thought while in FL it would be great to take him to a 'real' ball game (since he really has no concept of the rules-thought he should pass the other base runners on his team!). We were looking at Tampa and the Rays and thought we would do that, but then I saw there are lots of minor league teams too in the area. That would be just as good since he has no idea anyway what a professional team is Can anyone tell me who the closest minor league team would be? thanks so much!

There is a minor league team in Lakeland, it is about 35-40 minutes away from Disney toward Tamps. I believe they are called the Lakeland Flying Tigers.

If it is at all possible in your schedule I high suggest taking your 8 year old to a Sunday afternoon Rays game at Tropicana field. Sundays are family day. If you get there early two players sign autographs, there is face painting, family games, it's a great family friendly environment.The best part is that the kids are allowed to go down on the field and run the bases after the game. Oh and parking is free (in the main lot) if you have 4 or more in your in your car.

Florida is home to many minor league teams and the grapefruit league, for spring training. Sounds like you are not a big baseball fan (there's nothing wrong with that) but I am. I just looked up on the mlb.com site and found some info http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=l_bat&lid=123 hope this link works. Not too sure about which minor league team is closest to the area. I used to live in So. Cal and was and still am a huge Dodgers fan. Then I moved to San Antonio, TX and was surprised to find that minor league baseball is actually more entertaining and engaging than major league games, usually. If you can figure out from my link what is closeby, I say go for it. The minor league games are more affordable, and they have awesome team mascots that are so much fun. Have a great time!
