Baseball and Snuff

MLB Pitcher Curt Schilling just announced he has cancer. He hasn't said what kind yet, but years ago he had a mouth lesion removed and he has tried, in vain, since that time, to quit using snuff. (His wife, Shonda, is a melanoma survivor and she's been very active in that cause.)

I was just reading some of the articles out there about how prevalent the use of chewing tobacco still is in the MLB. What's even more concerning is that a lot of kids are using it in high school. I guess this is as good a time as any to help our young folks and sports players develop an awareness of the hazards of it.

Tough to tell since the type of cancer has not been disclosed. Four former Phillies who played at The Vet died of brain cancer (Ken Brett died in 2003, Tug McGraw and Johnny Oates lost their battles in 2004 and John Vukovich died in 2007). Then, Schilling's catcher, Darren Daulton was was diagnosed last July with glioblastoma.

Sure hope that Curt does well, and better than his teammates.
