could someone explain the difference? I know its height, but at what height would your counter be for you to want a counter stool vs a barstool?

Our island has room for 4 stools and is right around 3ft high. I'm trying to decide what to buy.

Is you counter the same height as your other kitchen counters or is it raised? If it's the same height you'd go for the shorter stools (counter stools). For a raised area you'd go with the taller stools (bar stools).

Also wanted to add, that we just bought new counter stools. The guy at the store said that many people think that they need bar stools when they actually need counter stools and end up with something too tall.

If the table or surface you plan on sitting at is the same height as your counters, get a counter stool. We have counter stools and they are very easy to sit on, my sister has a raised area in her kitchen and she has bar stools and honestly, you practically need a step stool to get up onto them. If you have small children it is very difficult for them to climb up on them.

If I am not mistaken, counter stools are 24" and bar stools are 30"

I have been wondering the same thing... we are building a house with a breakfast bar on our island.

Now I have no idea which to buy??????

We have a breakfast bar but we have 30 in bar stools because our counters are 1 inch higher (previous owner) than standard counters. The counter (24 inch) stools felt one inch too short. When I replace them, I may try to figure out how to add an inch. It is tricky to cut the bar stools to counter height.

can I ask how high your counters are?

actually, I'm posing that question for anyone who uses counter stools.

I appreciate all the input...sooo glad I asked.

Our counter is 36" high and we have the counter stools. Now I have to explain to my DH why I'm measuring the counter... :teeth:

You could get those chair glide things that screw into the bottom of the chair. They have some that will give you about an inch of extra height. You could also get one that has extra padding in the seat and that will boost you up some.

Yes, they are perfect. It's funny, though, when we were at the store ordering the stools my DH kept questioning the height. I assured him that the counter was the same height as the other counters and he knew they were, but he called home and had the kids measure the counter and measure our old stools. I just sat there and  until he was satisfied that I was right. :rotfl:

lol. yeah, I just told my husband that its counter stools that we should be looking for. He asked if I was sure...I said yes, because the people on the DIS said so. hehehe. I have a feeling a measuring tape will still come into play when we finally find some.

Hi! I am resurrecting this thread because, like a good diser ;) I did a search, before starting a new thread.

I am moving into an apartment on the other side of the USA and have not personally walked through it. All this time, I have been shopping for counter stools but now that I have read this thread, I should probably change to bar stools. Here's a picture of my future kitchen.

So I guess it's bar stools and not counter stools, huh? I'm so glad I did a search on the dis on this!

yep, I would say bar stools.

Funny you resurrected this thread...I still have yet to find counter stools I like. sigh.

If I'm Drinking a beer it's a bar stool. If I'm drinking a glass of tea it's a counter stool. :teeth:
