Has anyone ever used a bark collar for their dog? Did it work? Any recommendations?

Are you talking about the kind of collar that gives the dog a shock?

Maybe we could help you if you describe the problem for us.

(I wouldn't give a yes or no until I heard details, like what the problem is and what's been tried so far.)

I tried one that emitted a short BEEP everytime the dog barked. The idea was that it would distract him from whatever he was barking at. It worked the first time, then not so much...

Some friends use one that sprays a citrus-smelling liquid when the dog barks. I guess dogs don't like citrus because it seems to work.

My sil tried one with her dog. Apprently, however, she lived near a fort and one of the radio signals they used caused the collar to go haywire on her dog. :( Poor thing had burns that needed medical attention.

I know a bark collar worked on the dog of a family friend. He used to be this little, aggressive chi-mix. One time he almost took my mom's face off. So his owners got him a bark collar that would give him a small shock if he barked. Worked like a charm. He is now a very loving dog with no aggression issues. He may also be mellowing with age.

We tried two different ones. The first was the shock (DH's idea) and it didn't really make him stop and then it got to where it would just shock him for no reason. :( We got rid of it and tried the citrus smelling one. It worked for the first couple of days, but then he figured out that if he barked a lot it would run out and he wouldn't smell it anymore. So, we stopped it too. Now that he is a little older he doesn't bark nearly as much anymore.

we had one about 10 years ago - it would emit a shock with a 3rd bark. Our dog learned very quickly to bark twice and pause, bark twice and pause and so on and so on.

Thanks for the replies. I have a (purebred) beagle who is about 2 years old. I know beagles bark but it is getting worse the older she gets instead of lessening. She loves to be outside but she is driving my neighbors crazy. And now she is even barking alot in the house...
I have read about the various types of collars..shock, beeps, smell..I would prefer not to use the shock and it sounds like the other types may or may not work...and my dog would probably like a citrus smell.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I can tell you from experience that it is a very strong citrus smell. I was putting the collar on the dog one day and she barked. I ended up being the one getting sprayed in the face.

My first beagle would bark constantly. We started with the beeping collar, and it didn't work. We moved on to the citronella collar and it worked for a while. We ended up using the shock collar and it worked for a couple of weeks. I hated to use the shock collar on her, but my neighbors were complaining. She actually liked the shock collar. When we would get it out of the drawer, she would get excited. She was a crazy dog!

My second beagle barks quite a bit, but the citronella collar is enough to stop him. We have been using it on him for years. He doesn't wear it constantly. We only put it on him when we will be gone for a long time and I'm afraid that he will sit outside and bark for hours on end. This beagle is afraid of his own shadow, so the citronella is enough to stop him.

My third beagle doesn't bark at all. We call her the MUTE BEAGLE. She is 4 years old and I have only heard her bark maybe 10 times.

My boss also has a barking beagle and the citronella collar is enough to stop him.

I tried both the shock collar and the citronella collar on my Pom. The shock one didn't work at all. I think he had too much hair under the collar for him to feel anything. The citronella one gave me a headache and I didn't like all my stuff getting sprayed!

I used a shock collar on my shepard/great dane mix. He was a severely abused, starved animal and had huge separation issues. It worked pretty well. I think it is supposed to give a small shock at first, then get more intense if the barking persists. It took about 2 days for him to get used to it and quiet down. Most days I just put the collar on his neck without turning it on. Now I rarely use it. I know it seems mean to shock him and a lot of people think it is cruel, but he's gone from a dog that was out of control and in danger of being returned to the shelter to a dog that knows he's going nowhere and will always have a good home and is now comfortable to be by himself. In fact, he's outside without it right now just sleeping in the sunshine. :cloud9:

well, it's better than getting the "barker" removed like my neighbor did. i always feel so sorry for that dog when i see her.
