Are they so painful for dogs that they're cruel? Our dog is 7 and she's getting really mouthy and loud lately. She barks at every little thing and it's driving us bonkers. DH wanted me to look into bark collars.

Have you ever used one for your dog? What kind did you get -- the zapping kind, or the spray kind? Did it work? Would it work on an older dog?

Hi
I've never used a bark collar, but my sister tried one once with her dog. Her DH zapped him once and he cried so bad that they said never again, and that was on the lowest setting. Then she got another dog, and since her dogs got out of her fenced yard all the time and would run away when they would try to get them to come home, they got a personal trainer for their dogs. She suggested the collar, so now they got two of them. She trained my sisters dogs, (I think they got zapped once) and they are really good now. They never have to wear the collars. Personally, I could not even imagine doing that to a dog. My dog is so sweet, I just couldn't. And I guess some people would not use the collar the right way and the dog could suffer. My beautiful dog just turned 13 and she's great. Good luck with your dog.:goodvibes I just wanted to add that a friend of mine tried a spray bottle with water in it when her dog was barking and I think it worked for her.

We used one for our dog (called a shock collar) to train her to bird hunt. This collar was expensive $350 and it had 2 buttons. Thats a collar that uses a beeping noise (as a warning) and then the zapper button. The zapper button has quite a few levels. Maybe a barking collar is stronger than a shock collar. But we didn't have to zap her too many times because we spent alot of time training. I don't believe in hurting an animal or child, but a LITTLE tap on the behind makes them pay attention.

We have a very well loved and very spoiled lab. I'm sure I'll be in the minority here, but we use a bark collar on our dog and she's just fine.
She's a 8 y/o lab that barks/yelps at nothing, all day long----UNLESS she is with us or inside.
There are times when my DS's are outside playing with their friends in the front yard when our dog can not be with them (not fenced in there), and then she's in the backyard. The constant yelping/barking she did drove us nuts.

We bought the "shock" one, and after a time or two she realized what happened when she barked and it works.

We don't put it on her if we aren't home. She never wears it when she's in the house. I'd say the max. she's had it on is about an hour at a time. And honestly, once we put it on her she doesn't bark at all. Flame suit on.

Do you or the neighbors have another dog? If dog #2 is close enough to dog #1 barking, it can set off dog #1's bark collar.............I know someone who this happened to and the dog was constantly shocked for nothing he did

I have a dachsund and used a shock barking collar for about 6 months, after the first cpl of times, it really wasnt needed anymore but we left it on her. She hasnt worn it in about a yr now and it still pretty quiet. If she starts up again ill put it back on her. My neighbor sleeps during the day and she was driving him nuts yapping at the birds, so to keep him happy and to let her have some out side time i had to do it. Didnt really seem to hurt her, but did shut her up. Im sorry i dont know the name of it.

No flames from me. We had two dogs at one point that would not shut up if they saw people walking. We tried to keep them inside or be with them but at times it wasn't possible (big fenced yard). They never made noise at the wrong hours but sometimes during the day they would annoy the elderly neighbor next door. She called the cops 3 times. Bad for her that was the police would come out and the dogs would be sitting quietly and never even bark at them.:rotfl2: After a couple of "reminders" we were told that she could file a complaint against us and take us to court. We did go with the shock collars but the dogs are quick to learn. We got them at Petsmart for about $50 each. They were set at the lowest setting. The dogs get a beep warning and then if they barked again in 30 secs. it shocked them. Took my one dog exactly one shock for him to realize what the beep was for. He only needed it for about a week and then he could go outside without it. If he started barking I would just call his name and wave the collar at him. He would shut right up!
We had a choice between the collars or giving up the dogs. Dogs were a quick study and the neighbor finally moved!:thumbsup2

Trust me, I did not want to do this but the police did say that we could be forced to get rid of the dogs if the neighbor persisted in her complaints.

That's sad. :sad2: Poor guy!

Oh my... I have never laughed so frickin' hard in my life! I'm crying! My kiddies are rolling! :lmao:

What is this little cutie's name?

I don't know anything about the collars. I bought a squirt bottle and filled it with water. My pom got squirted twice and that took care of the problem. He'll look around for the bottle now before he does something he knows he shouldn't.

:rotfl2:

Forget the dog, I need to get one for my kids!

:lmao:

I was thinking the same thing but didnt want to get flamed.

Friends had one of the fence types to keep dogs in. The dogs figured out that if they ran fast enought it didnt hurt as much.

There are collars that will make a high pitched sound when they bark, that might work.

I haven't seen one that makes a sound. I wonder if that sort of thing would affect her. I think the ones that spray are a good idea -- how much barking would they do with a snout full of something nasty? Whatever I do, it has to be returnable.

It's not that I want her to stop barking completely, but she has to stop the yapping for no reason. If someone comes to the door, fine. If someone's walking around our house, fine. I don't even care if she barks when another dog is outside barking.

I wish that would work for mine. He loves getting squirted on
