barely "bleeping" out cuss words on tv...

Sure, I can change the channel. But, if I am watching a show, why do I need to change the channel to avoid commercials and previews to these raunchy and gross stuff.

I agree with this part of the comment. I am more than happy to make my decisions about what shows are acceptable to me/my family. (I personally try not to swear, but I am not against hearing it in movies/TV in certain cases. In other cases, I'll choose not to watch.)

However, I do take issue when I'm watching a show and they start showing commercials (usually for other shows) that are much more raunchy/violent/edgy than the show I'm watching. IMHO, the commercials shown shouldn't be more edgy than the content in the show that the commercial is shown in. (I'm talking about commercials for some shoot-'em-up, foul-mouthed cop show being shown during a rerun of the Cosby Show and stuff like that.)

To tie back to the OP -- those "half bleeps" bug me, too. Either bleep it, or don't... but don't pretend to bleep it and think we're so stupid we don't know what you've done.

I think they do it on purpose. Classy shows don't "bleep" it but rather you hear silence, like they do on Big Brother....and I can't believe I just used classy and Big Brother in the same sentence! :rotfl2:

It has nothing to do with being "classy."

Censorship of curse words is only required on broadcast television. Cable channels are not regulated, and are not required to bleep anything; they do it as a courtesy.

The point of bleeping as little as the word as necessary is so we know what the word is supposed to be but they also pass the minimum threshold for the censors.

If there is a show you don't want to see because of the language (or don't want your kids to see) it should be you that does the censoring at your end, not the television networks doing it at theirs.

"Naughty" words don't actually hurt anyone and I think way to many people over react to language.

I agree with Frank here. Millions of dollars are spent on lawsuits and fines for graphic language on broadcast media, some people lose their jobs over this.
There are so many options for content these days, let's spend our time and money more constructively. :)

The bolded part is where I take issue. Your idea of obscene and my idea of obscene may vary greatly, which is one of the reasons why I so love living in America. If I don't like something, I don't participate in it.

Hear that word again because it needs to be said in a context other than the one you're using it in:

I.

Me.

I need to decide for me.

You need to decide for you.

It's not up to me or you or the plethera of millions in this country to decide for everyone else in this country what should or should not be said or shown on TV. That's one of the main reasons we live here: freedom. Which has never, at any time, meant "freedom from being offended".

If enough people think a show or commercial has too much of what they opine as raunchy, obscene or distasteful material, that show or commercial dies. Kinda like how the old avant garde Fox Network of the 80's died and now it's run by the ultra-Conservatives.

I don't like Glenn Beck. I don't like Bill O'Reilley. I don't like Country music. Do I go on a campaign to get those things out of the airwaves? Nope. I use my American right to choose not to watch. I am, after all, an adult with the freedom of choice.

Both great posts, thanks! I can't express my thoughts any better.

I get annoyed with too much swearing, but at the same time, that's just my own problem, since they are just words.

I had a friend from NJ (which isn't to say that ALL people from there do it, but just to add to the story b/c it was all done with a VERY thick NJ accent) who used F as just about every third word. Woo it got exhausting! But hearing him give speeches when he was actually thinking about what he was saying was so weird, because he wouldn't use the words at all...he didn't even sound like himself!

That being said, I think this country is too PC. Everyone is so worried about offending someone else. For example, since when is it a "Holiday Tree" instead of a "Christmas Tree"?

Maybe...since it was a Yule Log before the other more recent holiday was plunked down directly over solstice? Maybe. ;)

Probably easier to think of the renaming as being inclusive of all (several other holidays right there surrounding solstice! and decorated trees are pretty, when it comes right down to it)...might make you feel better about it.
