bare minerals vs. sheer cover

I've only used Bare Minerals. But from what I understand BM has a slight shimmer to it and SC has more of a matte finish.

Is "Sheer cover" the same concept? Where can you buy it?

I'm ready to try Bare Mineral, but I'm also interested in Sheer Cover. I was intrigued by Lauren Huttons Color Wheel, but how old is "mature" skin?

I am used to wearing a combination cream moisturizer/sunscreen. Can I still use it under one of these mineral powdery make-ups?

I just started wearing bare escentuals and you can use moisturizer/sunscreen. You just give it a little time to absorb before you start applying.

The True and Clear Radiance have shimmer to them, but the foundations have a lot less shimmer, they look pretty matte to me. I started using BM a little over a month ago, and it took me a while to get used to it, but now I like it. I think it just takes some getting used to applying and finding the right mix that looks good on your skin.

Lynn, clear radiance and true do have a shimmer. I go VERY light when I use them. But I never thought the actual foundation had a shimmer to it. To each his own though.

Our local news station did a "Try It Before You Buy It" segment for this.

Belmont - Between the commercials and hundreds of websites, Bare Minerals make-up is all the talk. Bare Minerals, sold under the Bare Escentuals line, is all natural, chemical-free make-up that's supposed to be so pure you can sleep in it.

Three of my co-workers, Beth, Eddie and Mi, helped me test it out. The three women have diverse skin tones and unique skin issues. Beth wanted help covering up the redness in her skin. Eddie wanted to even-out her skin tone. Mi wanted help with spotty skin and acne.

We found Bare Minerals at a local salon, Belle Montage in Belmont. The salon offers free consultations and we got help picking out the right color and advice on how to apply it.

The Bare Minerals foundation goes on with a natural brush. It's a powder and we were told to remember to “swirl, tap, and buff”. You pour the powder into the cap, swirl it with your brush, tap off the excess, and then buff it onto your skin in a downward circular motion. We're told buffing it down helps so the powder doesn't show on your facial hairs.

All three women really liked the feel of it on their face. They said it was very light and they were impressed that it covered as well as a liquid foundation. They tried it for a couple weeks and reported back to me.

They're biggest complaint was that it was messy and got on their counter tops. I was told by viewers who loved Bare Minerals that you have to make sure you don't have too much on your brush. They thought that would cut-down on the mess.

None of the women broke out from Bare Minerals, even after sleeping in it. Eddie and Beth had mixed reviews. Eddie thought the color that was chosen for her was too greyish. But she liked how light it felt. Beth liked it, but not the messiness. They said they wanted to give it more time before deciding if they'd switch from their old make-up regimen. Mi on the other hand says she's going back to her old make-up.

Belle Montage sells the Bare Minerals foundation for $26.50. The brush we were told we needed sells for $23.25. A separate concealer and sheer powder for shine control are recommended, which the ladies said they needed. Those would cost extra, which was a complaint from Beth as far as the added cost.

We found there are a lot of websites that sell Bare Minerals make-up, and there are plenty of deals out there. A store in Muskegon also sells it, Natural Radiance Aesthetics on Harvey Street.

I've received dozens of emails from women about Bare Minerals. About 90% of the women who emailed me LOVE it. They say it never gives them breakouts, and they love how natural it looks. The few who didn't like it said it was too expensive for everything you need, and that it didn't look good in natural light.

Mixed reviews on Bare Minerals. It could be something you might want to try for yourself.

I think everyone makes a mess using BM when the first start. It takes awhile to get the hang of it :)

I've tried both. I like BE better. It looks more natural on me. I'm very light. I love how it feels on my face. I bought the starter kit at the BE store and then I bought another kit on QVC. I'm hooked.

I've tried both too. I stick with BE because it is easier to get (I can go right up to my local Ulta). With Sheer Cover I have to mail order it through them or go through HSN or eBay. Too much trouble.

I give Sheer Cover a bit of an edge because I think their foundation has a bit more of a natural color. I find the BE foundations to have a teensy bit too much orange to them but nothing that can't be adjusted.

I wouldn't say that BE "shimmers" but there is something slightly (and I say "slightly") different in their foundation. Bottom line is that Sheer Cover has a bit more of a matte look, but not much.

I also really like the concealer that Sheer Cover makes. It is VERY creamy and works well with dry skin (mine!!). So I continue to use that. Also Sheer Cover makes a "Lip to Lid Highlighter" that is very much like BE's "Warmth." I find the Sheer Cover version to be much more natural and easy to add to the regimen.

Finally, if you get a DVD for Sheer Cover they do not instruct you to "work out of the lids" for makeup application. They show them getting a plain piece of white paper and dumping some of the powders out onto the paper. Since I started with Sheer Cover, this is how I learned to put the stuff on. I use a piece of paper on my sink top for application. In fact, I rip the mostly white pages out of old magazines and use this. The sheen on the magazine pages keeps the make up from adhering to the paper. I use this sheet several days in a row before a I need a new one. There is absolutely no mess.
