Hi. Has anybody filed bankruptcy lately? Can you tell me how it has affected your life? I'm afraid I'm heading in this direction. My husbands job is really bad lately and I'm close to my limits on the credit cards. I thought this was a temporary thing but it doesn't look like it's getting much better. How about those debt consolidaters? Thanks for any help or if someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks Amy i'm heading over there now. I really hope I don't have to. I've never had any hand outs and this is making me sick.

check out bankruptcyforum message boards. A plethra of good info and advice.

debt consolidation looks worse on your credit than a bankruptcy. But do check out that credit board they can really help you.

Stay away from debt consolidation!!!! It was a nightmare for us, not to mention how we were ripped off!

we filed and were discharged within the past 8mths. You can PM me with any questions that you might have.

I was in your situation last year and now I am debt free! I called all those get out of debt now, i even went to a bankrupsy lawyer and paid the retainer fee $1800. I was in the hole $56,000 and now ZERO!!
Well I did it myself I didnt need anyone to do the work, which was easy. This is what you have to do
Step one: Get your credit report!!
I go to transunion.com they are the actually credit bureau.
Step two: Write down a list of all your debt, interest rates, what you pay per month.
Here is where it gets a little tricky....
I dont know what your debt looks like but here is an example.
A credit card with a balance of 6,000 and a minimum payment of $350/mth
Did you know that if you stop paying on a credit card that they will settle your account in 6 mths of NO PAYMENTS! Now this is very important, you can not pay them one cent or it will not work. You just have to cry the blues to them when they call. Tell them that you cant make any payments even if they try to work out a payment plan that sounds good DONT DO IT!!
Now when they settle they will want payment in full so save save save your money. Here is how...
With my example above with a debt of 6,000 and 350/mth. Instead of mailing that to the company to make a minimum payment hold onto it **DONT SPEND IT ** Now in six months you will have $2,100 cash to settle your debt. You will have to come up with a story like you are able to borrow money from your sister and this is all she has. Dont give them an amount let them tell you.
You can most likely settle with them for $1500-2,400. If you have any money left over save it for the next card. Most companies will start off with settling at 50-60 cents on the dollar. You can get them down as low as 40- 25% (that is what i did)
Now just remember this will effect your credit score. (It isnt as bad as a bankrupsy) Your report will read "debt settled for lesser amount". It will affect if you are trying to buy a house for a few years.
If you have several cards you have to see how much a month you can save for each one. Try to get rid of the larger ones first then keep going. Make sure that you also get a statement from them that they are willing to settle for X amount before you paythem. I had them fax it to me so I didnt have to wait for the mail.
Good luck Hope this helps you.
I am debt free, only one credit card open but with a zero balance. We are planning a disney trip to celebrate! Which will be paid with from saving cash not credit.:cool1:

Now for those of you thinking hmmm I could go on a shopping spree and then do this, i dont advise it. My business flopped and this was mostly business debt, and some personal. It wasnt like I was planning to do this, because that is just wrong.

Also remember if you settle on your cc that you may have to claim the difference on your taxes next year. Dh and I several years ago had to settle on a cc and we had to claim the difference on our taxes. This is why we don't have cc any longer. Both of us our spenders and we figured we couldn't be responsible enough to have them. We pay cash for everything. If we don't have it, we don't buy it. Good luck on your adventure.

so what you are saying is

I had the money to make my payments, I just didn't

Then I called them up and lied to them and told them that I would pay them about 25% of what I owed.

They fell for it.

Now I'm going to celebrate and go to Disney with the money that I borrowed but didn't have to pay back!

yippeee!!!!!

Good Lord. :sad2:

Nothing like a great example of personal responsibility.

TROLL ALERT!

(Note the number of posts, note the fact that this Makes NO SENSE! LOL!)

thinkaboutdisney- you aren't debt free you just managed to screw the credit card companies out of money you owed them. by the way have you gotten your 1099c's from all the credit card companies yet? you have to claim the amount that the credit card companies wrote off as income. glad to see you are celebrating your financial stupidity by spending money on vacation

I could have just claimed bankrupsy and had it all erased not paying a penny. I gave them all the money we had!!!!Like I said my business flopped, we used the money that we had left in our checking from the business. We wernt able to pay the minimums for more than a year. And this is exactly what happens when you go to those debt consolidators, they just do the work for you. And sorry this is the first time I am on this disboards.com. doesnt seem to nice here
Oh yes I did get me 1099's and they were filed at the accounts and I didnt have to pay anything because I had a huge return. (I overpaid on my quarterly taxes)

oh I hope so.

I'd much rather think somebody is a Troll than a jerk who walks away from paying their bills and then celebrates by booking a Disney vacation.

You never know. I think it's pretty common for people to declare bankruptcy then go to Disney. You see it all the time on the boards, even this thread -just glance at the signatures. Now, the poster may well be in disguise, I agree, but the whole thing has the ring of truth to it.
