Banking points

We just joined DVC on our July Dream cruise. Our UY is February. We have already booked a stay for marathon weekend in January of 2012. We have points left in our 2011 UY which have to be banked by September 30th.

If we would decide to book a December 2011 trip will we be allowed to use some of the banked 2011 points or would we have to borrow points from the 2012 UY?

Once the points are banked they belong to the next UY. They can not be borrowed for a reservation in the original UY. So you are correct you would need to borrow your 2012 points if you make a reservation in the current UY and after your 2011 points have been banked.

i hope you are not planning to travel late in your UY on a regular basis. if you should need to cancel, traveling late in your UY increases the risk that your pts will go to waste.
