I'll start by apologizing, as I'm sure this has been answered before many times. And, being an owner for many years now, I should know. Here is what happened: I booked 2 nights for 12/2017, borrowing points from my 2018 UY (August). Later in the day, better dates opened up, so I booked THOSE the same way...borrowing 2018 points. I then cancelled the original reservation BUT now I have 31 points in my 2017 use year and 74 points in my 2018 year (105 total points left between the 2 years). Question I have is since I borrowed both reservations with borrowed 2018 points, why did 31 points go to 2017 UY? UGH...so confused! Thank you to anyone who can explain this to me.

Because once you borrow points, those points go to the current UY. You'd have needed to cancel the existing reservation before booking the new one to use the already-borrowed points.

Ok, that makes sense...but why only 31 points instead of the entire 45 I borrowed?

Nevermind...I got it. So, I have to use these points from 08/2017-07/2018, correct?

Yes, that is correct. Borrowing is a final transaction so you moved them from the 2018 UY back into your 2017 UY. If they are not used by July 31, 2018 then they will expire.

Call MS. If the cancelled reservation and the replacement are in the same UY, they can reallocate the points so those unused borrowed points will be used.

I don't believe there is anything to reallocate. The 37 points in the 2017 UY are actually borrowed 2018 points if I understood correct that were freed up when they cancelled the first reservation they had made by borrowing points.

What about the 37 borrowed points that went back into their account when the cancelled the original reservation? If they call MS, those could be used for the current reservation which was made before they cancelled the original one.

They already booked the current reservation, banking more points to do so. When they cancelled the original one it doesn't change the points. All of them were banked into the 2017 UY so they are stuck there. There is nothing to reallocate.

Thank you all! We're waiting on 1 waitlisted night, and we added another night. If and when that waitlisted night comes through, we only lose 1 point. :)

If I can ask a question related to borrowing. I have an April UY. I will be making a reservation next week for April 2018. I will have to borrow 2019 points. If I change my reservation at 7 months will the borrowed 2019 points go to my 2018 UY? If so, can I only use these points to make a reservation before April 2019?

Yes, borrowing is a final transaction and once you borrow the points remain in the UY they were borrowed into which in this case is your 2018 UY. If you change your reservation at 7 months it will use those borrowed points first and any left over borrowed points will have to by used by March 31, 2019 or they will expire.

Thank you for the clarification!!

What if I have a February use year and I book a trip in January 2018 using my borrowed 2018 points technically for a 2017 use year trip....then I have to cancel the January 2018 trip. There is no longer any time left in the 2017 to use those points so do I lose them?

You would have until the end of Jan 2018 to use those points or they will be lost.

What if you bank points from 2017 into the 2018 use year and then you decide you would like to use them in 2017 and adjust your already made 2017 reservation?

Both banking and borrowing are final transactions. Once they are done those points stay in the year your have banked or borrowed them into. If you had current 2018 points though you could borrow them back into your 2017 UY to use.

If you banked all 2017 points into 2018 and then you want to make a reservation in your 2017 use year, you'd have to borrow 2018 points.

Planning a stay at the end of your UY can be pretty risky. To clarify: when we say that the pts have to be used by the end of your UY, we mean that they have to be used to complete a stay, not just to book a new stay. So we try to encourage new purchasers to consider buying a contract with a good UY for them.

If a Jan stay needed to be cancelled, it would be difficult to book a new stay due to limited availability. You could try to rent the stay you can't use personally at a discount or offer it for free to friends or family, but your options would be limited.
