Banking & borrowing in one UY & just confusing myself

I may be over-thinking things, but I am looking for answers/advice before I make another stupid DVC mistake in this week.
We have a December UY, with an outstanding point balance in our 2013 UY. In two days, I plan on booking 11 months out for a stay that falls into my 2014 UY at one of my home resorts, so of course, I would bank those points into my 2014 UY to use for that stay. And I planned on doing that, until ... this is where I am over-thinking things:
Next month, I am considering booking a non-home resort seven months out for Sept. (VGC), but I'm still not sure just yet.
Since I am banking my 2013 AKL points into 2014 and will have a Dec. 2014 stay already booked with those points, could I borrow from the 2014 UY allotment to my 2013 UY for that VGC stay to completely cover it?
I am assuming "yes," but I assumed this morning when I booked VGF for Dec. 2014 that the system would use my 2013 points first without me having to bank, but I was wrong (it ended up borrowing from 2015). Lucky for me and my lack of thinking, the MS CMs were nice enough to fix it and put my 2015 points back where they belong.

First, as you discovered you must initiate the banking and it must be done prior to making a reservation. Borrowing on the other hand is only done when you need it for a particular reservation so it can be done at the time you are reserving.

So the reservation that you are going to make at AKV will not use up all of your 2014 points, correct? There are two ways you could handle this and what you are thinking of to borrow reamining 2014 points if you do go to VGC is correct. The other option is to not bank your 2013 points but to keep them in this UY and book the Dec 2014 points with your 2014 AKV points. Then you would have your 2013 points available for the VGC reservation. If you ended up not taking that trip you could still bank your 2013 points by July 31, 2014 and then call MS and ask them to reallocate (ie, replace) the 2014 AKV points you used with the 2013 points that you just banked.

If the VGC trip is really up in the air I'd probably just bank and then borrow if you do go to Cali.

For use of the on-line system you must bank points first before doing a reservation if you want to use banked points. That is also true if you call MS. They don't assume you want to bank points for a reservation so you need to do it first. Both the on-line system and MS are set up so that if you have banked points, those will be used first when making a reservation.

And yes you can borrow points for that Sep trip even if you have already banked points into 2014. What I cannot determine is why you would do it that way. From what you mention I am assuming you are an AKV owner and will be resereving AKV for dec 2014. You could just use Dec 2014 points to make the Dec 2014 reservation, and then use the Dec 2013 AKV points points for the Sep trip. If Sep does not come through in February at 7 months out, you can bank the 2013 points into 2014 and at that time MS will allow you to re-alloocate points in your Dec 2014 reservation by taking out Dec 2014 points and replacing them with Dec 2013 points that have been banked. Thus, what you may consoder doing at this time is keeping the Dec 2013 points you need for the VGC reservation in Sep and bank only those you won't need for that reservation.

Ahh, ok. So basically if I don't bank the 2013 and just straight book with 2014 points, MS can do with those 2013 UY 40 points what they did this morning when I accidentally borrowed points for the VGF stay ... just switch the 2014 points used for the AKL ressie with the 2013 points, thus putting 40 points back into my 2014 UY?
I'm just putting a disclaimer out here: I have no common sense! But this is starting to make sense!

They can reallocate points but they are not required to do so. Your borrow mistake may count towards a one time not documented "we will fix it".

So would it just be safer to go my original convoluted route?

You would first bank the 2013 points and then they would substitute those banked points for the 2014 points.

Thanks everyone for your input! I went ahead and banked then booked AKL value this morning for my in-laws.

Just note a point about the on-line reservation system for future reference. When you are finished doing everything and then get to the last page that confirms that the reservation is made, that page will also show which points were used including whether you borrowed. Near the bottom of that page is a link that you can click on to cancel the reservation and all points go back to their original status, including borrowed points go back into their original use year, as if no reservation had been made. Thus, the system gives you one last chance to reverse everything and avoid the need to call MS.
