banking/borrowing clarification

We are planning a big family trip in March 2015 (our use year is August) and we have 2 contracts with BWV totaling 250 points. We are using 77 points in November of this year to book a studio at BWV (which leaves us with 173 pts).

Where I get confused is how far ahead can I borrow points? Our plan is to book a 2 bedroom and a separate studio for the March 2015 trip.
Doing an estimate based on 2014 point charts it looks like we will need 409 points (we will have 423 available for use if I add the 173 plus our 250 pts coming to us in August) I had thought of booking another suite for a friend but would need to borrow into 2016 but not sure if that is possible.

March 2015 is in your 2014 UY, you can borrow from your August 2015 UY when you book the reservation.

For a March 2015 stay, August 2014 points would be current year. So you can use banked 2013, current 2014, borrowed 2015. You can't borrow 2016. 2016 could be borrowed for a stay 8/1/15 or after.

For me, the easiest way to remember is to just think about the UY you are traveling and go from there...forget about the calendar year. And, since what you can use points for is based on the date of the trip, when you call isn't something that needs to be considered either.

So, as mentioned, your March 2015 trip is in your August 2014 UY...you can use banked 2013, 2014 and borrowed 2015 points to "pay" for the trip...no matter when you call.

Any trip can be booked with banked from UY before travel, UY of travel, and borrowed from the UY after travel.

Thank you! another quick question. My daughter, son in law and grand daughter will be in the 2 bedroom with us, and the suite is for my son & his girlfriend. If by chance my son is unable to come on the trip (it is hard for him to plan 11 months out and I want to in order to get BWV Standard rooms) what is my timeline for canceling his room? I know at some point if that needs to be done my points will go into "holding" if I read that correctly?

Points go into holding if cancelled 30 days or less before arrival. If you do have to cancel before 30 days, make sure member services releases the current year points in your reservation. That way they can be banked.

Just a suggestion. If the studio may get cancelled, use current UY points to make this reservation and the borrowed points for the 2 br. Then if it has to be cancelled and you will still be within your banking window and those points could easily be banked. It is possible though to have MS redistribute the points if need be.
