Bank Concerns about Employee

No, OP shouldn't HAVE to change banks but it might just be easier on her, with the work situation being involved.Besides, it's likely to her advantage to switch to a credit union, and if the bank employee is that stupid she'll be found out before long anyway.

Do you know for sure she looked at your account....is there a way she knew about you shopping from something else or are you sure...I am just trying to think on the other side if..:confused3

and for you guys that work at banks..if the OP goes to the MGR and tells them this......what if the worker just denies it?

 to you OP

I have a situation that I have never encountered before and not sure exactly how to handle it. I am a daycare teacher and have kids I love dearly that I see every day. I have good relationships with the majority of parents in my class.

Now, I went to the local branch of my bank yesterday on my lunch hour, only to find out one of the mothers is now working there-she is a transfer from another location. A location I don't go to since it is out of my way and not that close to work or my house. I made my deposit with another teller and she said hi/exchanged pleasantries, ect...when she said, "I see you spent a lot of money at Michaels and Hobby Lobby in the last couple of weeks. Buy anything fun with that two hundred dollars you spent at Hobby Lobby last Saturday?(which was cartridges/christmas tree/art supplies)" It completely blew me out of the water that she'd admit to looking at my account and tracking my purchases.

I am uncomfortable with the idea that she has access to see my accounts and my spending habits, ect. Should I call someone at the main branch and request that she have no access to my accounts? I have nothing to hide, but the idea makes me a little leary because I don't want to buy something at the local adult store(for an upcoming bachelorette party) and have it brought back up to me at work or use my debit card at the bar and have her ask me about that in front of other parents or my co-workers.

My sister in law is a branch manager at another different bank and she is restricted from accessing my parent's information there. Would it be the best course of action in this situation because I see her daily when she brings her child in to the daycare? I don't want to make things uncomfortable, but my banking business and spending habits are none of her business.

Unless you have a compelling reason to stay at that bank, I'd just switch to a credit union.

Why should OP have to change banks because her privacy was breached by an employee? She should not be inconvenienced by switching banks because of this lady's poor decisions.

OP, I would tell the branch manager. This sounds selfish, but you have to protect yourself and not worry about her. Your banking information and spending habits are private, and the employees must respect that.

ETA: Would you feel differently if this lady was not a daycare client? If you didn't know the lady and she said this to you, would you report her?

I recommend ANYONE switch to a credit union rather than a bank. I just think this is a convenient time for OP to do so. And you are right, she does have to protect herself, and this could come back to bite OP at her job- no matter how discreet she is. On the very off chance she IS the only person crazy teller has done this to, she could cause problems for her at work even if it's reported anonymously.

As for the 200 spending trip-I was in another state over two hours away from our home, so no one I knew would have known about the trip since it was a spur of the moment road trip and I didn't say anything to anyone about going beforehand, so not likely she would have overheard me talking to anyone.

I work in IT and have access to a lot of personal information of customers and employees. This type of position comes with it a high level of responsibility. The fact that this woman SAID that means that she does not have the mental capacity to handle a job like this nor the integrity to work at this type of position. I believe it is your responsibility to make it known that she is not trustworthy enough.

I am sure that this can be done anonymously. Just inform the bank manager privately and say that your name cannot be used. The bank, I am sure, can track her computer activities over a period of time and 'catch' her in the act of accessing inappropriate/unnecessary information. This will be enough to terminate her with 'proof' and without it just being your say so.

I would feel horrible but have to take action.

I like this approach because it does provide proof that this person has accessed your bank records. If she has looked at your file, I can guarantee she has been looking up neighbors, family, old boyfriends...

We had a similar situation at my former work place (not a bank but a government office) and the employee was brought into the bosses office and presented with a report of all the files she had accessed in the last few months and was asked for her reasons for peeking at these files. The situation ended with her being escorted off the property with her personal belongings in a box.

Depending on how upset you are, I'd handle this one of two ways:

1) Tell her privately that her viewing your account for no legitimate reason really bothers you. If she has half a brain, she'll get that she stepped over the line.

I don't think I'd bother talking to her privately. We already know she doesn't have half a brain, KWIM? And, she'll just check your account under the radar and probably will gossip to others about your spending. I would assume this based on her very inappropriate comments.

Cant u go to the manager and say I have never had a accquaintance at the bank and could u plz make sure she does not see my transactions as it would be awkward for me.
That way you are not jeopardizing her job but getting what you want.

Do you work for a credit union??? I HATE them, because they make it so very difficult to conduct business. NO debit cards. I can only us THEIR ATM, or come in to make a withdrawl, and most in our area have ONE location, sometimes 2. They are a complete inconvinence and waste of time, for little to no benefit! My first bank account was with a credit union, and as soon as I was on my own I switched. Mom and Dad did in on purpose so that I would really have to work to get to any money in that account. I don't think I could run a household from it.

Just curious, but didn't the teller you used hear her make these comments? At my bank conversations aren't very private when at the counter. I would be mortified too, and would definately be speaking to my boss along with the bank manager. No excuse for this.

No debit card for credit union is strange. My credit unions both of them have everything Credit and debit cards. No charge at any ATM. Excellent rates for all loans. Love my credit union

No, I don't work for a credit union and I've never had any of those problems. I have a visa debit card and I can use any ATM in the country with no fees, and they pay 4% interest on my checking account. No inconvenience, huge benefits.

Well I could start with the huge complaint that your credit union is not paying any taxes. But we won't go into that. Let's stay with the topic at hand.

The bank should (unless they are totally off the wall) have the ability to query the history of inquiries made by that user ID - account numbers, time of inquiry, etc.

Even if she is stupid enough to look it up, she never should have been dumb enough to say anything.

She needs to be called on it unfortunately. Perhaps the management could just present it to her that she was 'overheard' & it was verified. It's up to them as to how to call her on it, but it needs to be done in my opinion. If she has been looking, she probably has checked your paycheck and wherever else you are spending your money too. I doubt you want to do anything right before Christmas, but it also might take them time to check it.

I have online banking, a checking account with a VISA card that's part of the Allpoint network, a line of credit, and a savings account with unlimited "flex"/sub accounts through the credit union at my work. They're on post, but they also have 5 or 6 other locations throughout the area.

I have been a member of another two credit unions (my dad's and my school's) that I did not like, but I love mine now! So it can be very personal, just like banks.

no. I definitely would NOT change banks. At the rate she's going, she wont be there at your bank long. Just as soon as you change banks, she will probably be working there after being fired from this one.

Makes you wonder why she was transferred from the other branch???

She shouldn't have to but would probably be in her best interest to since her bank account has now been breached and should this woman decide to retaliate it could bite the OP hard. This woman now has her bank account info and could do so much damage.

OP, definitely contact the bank manager. Let him know what has taken place and if you don't want to move your account than you need to at least get a new account and cards to protect yourself.

Wow, I have always had awesome experiences with the credit unions I have used. We have Visa Debit Cards, can use any ATM with the whatever brand logo (ie Star brand or Maestro) and if they are in the credit union's network than there is no extra fees for using a different credit union's ATM. My check is normally in my account the evening before payday as well.

My credit Union has 5 branches within 15 miles as well.

1) I'd let the manager of your daycare know that some crap may be coming through if this mom puts two and two together and tries to retaliate by attacking you at your job.

2) Speak with the bank manager privately, try to be anonymous as possible to cover your own rear, and explain what happened. At the very least demand they look through your account and make sure no other unauthorized access has been made to any other aspects. Frankly I would threaten to take my business elsewhere unless they terminated her, but that's me. Something needs to be done about her, who knows who else she is browsing in her spare time for kicks? Generally when we do banking we expect our private transactions to be...you know...private.

Sorry if this seems harsh, but there are too many people that need a job in today's economy. A waste of space like her that can't be bothered to follow the most basic of privacy rules should NOT be a position like that and should be fired posthaste to make room for someone who does deserve the job.
