Not that he has ever been officially tested for this, but my DH claims to be allergic to bananas. He loves bread pudding, but does not eat bananas as they make him sick. Can/will Ohana do something different for him for dessert if I call ahead?:banana::banana:

If he can eat the bananna pudding he should be fine with the bread pudding with bananna sauce but he could ask for the bread without the sauce or just a serving of ice cream.

Does Ohana no longer have a dessert menu? Banana vaccination for your DH:banana:

Some people actually are allergic to bananas. There's a protein in it that can cause it. If they are they might also react to avocado, kiwi and chestnut. And possibly latex (similar).

When we ate there in June, the bananas and sauce came on the side. Perhaps you can ask for them to come separately and put it on the desserts of whomever wants the bananas.

They will provide him with a different dessert. Recently I developed an allergy to bananas. There are actually 2 different kinds of allergies to bananas. One is to the actual fruit and the other is from tree pollen. I really hope mine is from tree pollen because I don't want to be allergic to latex along with everything else. I'm including a quote from http://foodallergens.ifr.ac.uk/food.lasso?selected_food=5#summary for you.

Banana allergy can take two different forms: one associated with allergy to tree pollen, such as birch, and another type associated with latex allergy. People with birch-pollen allergy can develop symptoms either immediately or up to 1 hour after eating fresh banana or a banana-containing food. Symptoms comprise local reactions in the mouth and throat with itching and inflammation (called oral allergy syndrome, OAS).
Others develop banana allergy because of the similarity between the allergens in banana and natural rubber latex (e.g. gloves, condoms, balloons) a condition known as the latex-fruit syndrome. Symptoms developed by these individuals comprise generalised urticaria, abdominal pain, vomiting and sometimes life-threatening symptoms. These individuals often develop adverse reactions to chestnut, avocado, mango and kiwi.

WDW is the best place to dine with any type of food allergy or other type of food sensitivity. They go above & beyond to make sure you not only have a safe but a pleasurable meal.

but if he eats banana pudding with bananas can he really be allergic to them??

DGS is allergic to peanuts and eggs so I know what allergies really are like. We avoid peanuts completly but know that trace eggs are ok.

I am sure that if it is an allergy that WDW will take care of him!

My youngest son used to tell everyone he was allergic to tomatos because he didn't like them. :rotfl:

I'm sure Ohana can accomodate your husband with an alternative sweet...they have alternatives for vegetarians and people with peanut allergies, I don't know why they wouldn't for someone with banana allergies. Tho don't be surprised after the appitizers and main courses that he might not have any room left! :goodvibes I always try to save room for the banana foster, but it never fails, I'm too stuffed to enjoy it!

While I appreciate the inquest that my DW made on my behalf, I do want to point out something from her initial message to avoid any further confusion:

Food allergy is probably not the best term to use; it is more of an intolerance of bananas due to the tummy troubles that they cause me.

I do not eat banana pudding, but I do loves me some bread pudding, which is why we wanted to find out if the Ohana bread pudding could be presented to yours truly without the potentially offending bananas bringing an early end to the evening for me.

Thank you, that is all.:hippie:

Sorry, I misread. You might truly have an allergy as they can show up in a lot of ways!!!

We deal with some serious allergies and it is so funny how many people say, "Oh I am allergic to that. If I eat more than two servings I get sick."

We have not done Ohanna's yet with a peanut allergy but have heard that the cheif there is #1 and he will take care of you!!! DS a few years ago got ice cream instead of the pudding as he was sure he did not like it and then ate ALL of mine. They willl help you out!!!!!

It could be the early stages of an allergy. It's good that you are aware of it and know to avoid bananas. In general the more exposure the worse the allergy becomes.

Do you tolerate avocadoes & kiwi ok? If you get a tummy ache from them too it might be a good idea to visit an allergist at some point for testing and advice. Also stay away from latex ... when you go to a dr/dentist ask that they use nitrile gloves instead of latex.

Thank you so much for that link! :worship:

Thanks for asking the question WtB. That was one of my concerns also.

I too have an 'intolerance' for bananas....seriously, I thought it was just me!
I also cannot 'tolerate' avocado, I get the same reaction (doubled over in pain) therefore, no more guacamole for me. :sad2:

That sounds like latex-fruit syndrome which is an allergy to chitinase.

The pudding part doesn't have bananas in it. They're in the sauce. Our sauce was served on the side, but our waitress poured it on top of the pudding when she brought it to the table. We didn't ask, she just did it. :confused3 Just mention the banana allergy to your server and let her/him know the sauce must be on the side.

Have your DH get tested for banana and latex allergies. My cousin got tummy aches when she ate bananas. She found out it was a more serious situation when she had to have a root canal and the oral surgeon wore latex gloves. She went into anaphylactic shock. Luckily, the office had an epi-pen on hand and she recovered. She went to an allergist and he confirmed the allergies. Better safe than sorry. :goodvibes

My daughter is allergic to bananas, latex, kiwi, and avocado. When I called Disney Dining to discuss her allergy, they assured me that it was noted on the reservation and that the Chef would make other arrangements at Ohana. LeCellier prepared her Sundae in a completely different area and brought it out separately from the ones containing banana. Hope that helps.

I hate banana's and I love the bread pudding at Ohana's. Both times we ate there, the sauce was on the side. I'm pretty sure that is the only place the bananas are in since I didn't taste it in the pudding. Just make sure it is noted on the ADR.

You are welcome. So you have to avoid latex as well. I want mine to be the other allergy because I love avocados. My reaction was mostly in my throat so I hope that is what mine is. I have enough allergies and I don't want to deal with anything else that could be serious.

As I said earlier, they will take good care of you.

Hubby asked for a different dessert at Ohana because he is a diabetic.

He had a wonderful looking dessert with berries and such. He was not at all jealous of my bread pudding.
