I have never driven this route so please excuse my lack of knowledge. We are taking the auto-train leaving from NJ to Lorton VA. If we take I-95 south from NJ, do we have to go through both the Ft.Mchenry Tunnel and the BAltimore harbor tunnel?
Thanks for your help.

No you only go through one or the other. I-95 goes through the Fort McHenry Tunnel, and I-895 goes through the Harbor Tunnel. You can go through either. I-895 meets up again with I-95. Before you get to the Baltimore area, check out the traffic reports on the radio and then choose which way to go.

Are you trying to avoid the tunnel? you can go through the city or around the beltway (way out of the way) if you're trying to avoid it.

AFAIK the only good reason to avoid the tunnel is if you have a propane (or similar) tank.

As musical suggests, try and get a traffic report --hopefully an accurate one--before you choose which tunnel. If you don't hear anything, the McHenry Tunnel (I-95 itself) is your best choice.
Try to avoid rush hour if at all possible!!!!!

I wanted to know,so I have an idea for tolls and a general sense so I can tell if my GPS is taking me the best way. I assume my GPS will choose the i-95 route.??

I don't see why it would route you any way other than the I-95 Mchenry Tunnel. It's the most direct route--and it's a wider, better tunnel.

I agree with Uncleromulus. The only reason I take the Harbor Tunnel all the time is because I live south of the city toward Annapolis, so that tunnel is the best route for me when I travel north on I-95. But if you hear on the radio that there is some kind of backup on the Fort McHenry Tunnel or anywhere on I-95 between where I-95 and I-895 split to where it comes back together again, then I would take I-895. The key is to start listening to traffic reports as soon as you can get a good Baltimore radio station. The radio stations that have traffic reports is 100.7 if you like classic rock. They give traffic reports about every 20 minutes. Even if you don't like country, 93.1 has traffic reports every 10 minutes during rush hour drives. 106.5 is a contemporary popular mix station that also gives traffic reports. WBAL AM 1090 gives traffic reports every 5 minutes during rush hours (this is talk radio).
