My son, 7, asked for Bakugan stuff for Christmas. Well he and I just sat down and tried to play it, and I don't get it. You roll the little ball, land on a card and then what?

There should be instructions with the game. It plays with a point system. Each card and bakugan has a point value. Each player rolls the bakugan onto a card. When the bakugan rolls onto the card, you add up the points between your bakugan and the card. Whichever bakugan is worth the most total points wins that match and keeps the opposing players bakugan. Then you move onto the next match. I hope this helps and I didn't just confuse you. I learned by watching my ds and dh play. It's actually a great way to work on math skills because you have to keep adding and subtracting points.
I didn't even try to figure it out, but my DS 8 had no problems. He read the rules, set it all up and started playing. All 3 of the kiddos have been playing for 2 days and having a ball (no pun intended... well, maybe a little intended ) Maybe you have to be under a certain age to "get it".
It looks more like it came from Japan, along the same lines as Pokemon. I am really in no position to answer though, since I only just heard about it a month ago.
