Has anyone ever put baking soda in their spaghetti sauce? If so, does it make it taste any different? Dh has esophagitis, and the nurse at the doctors office said she's heard of people doing this to reduce the acidity of the tomatoes. Just wondering what it would taste like. I think she said people put in a teaspoon. TIA

My Grandmother used to put a carrot in for that reason. Don't know if it really worked though.

a carrot huh? interesting. did you eat the carrot or just throw it out?

I put sugar in my sauce to help cut down on the acidity.

I put a finely chopped carrot and a little sugar in my sauce for that reason. It tastes good too!

This is interesting
My DH has acid reflux really bad and Loves Spaghetti sauce so
I will have to try some of this

I usually will throw in a little bit of butter to help cut down on acidity...that's what my mom always taught me to do...

I use sugar in my sauce too, but I may try the baking soda in addition to it. DH has reflux and consequently doesn't want red sauce that often. I used to live on the stuff growing up and I miss it. Maybe the baking soda would work for DH.

i do! it doesn't change the flavor just the color. makes it darker.

Yes a carrot will reduce the acid from the tomatoes. Don't know if it is enough for your DH. I have done it and the sauce tastes great.

My mom and I both use baking soda in our sauce. She has had stomach problems for many years now and this definitely works to cut the acidity. And no, it doesn't make it taste any different. What you will notic once you put the baking soda in is that the sauce will start to foam. That's the acidity rising to the top of the sauce and I usually scoop this out.

DH likes to put sugar in his sauce as well. He'll also sprinkle some on pizza sauce.

I put baking soda in my homemade sauce. About 1 1/2 tsp. to a pot of sauce, it does foam up, but I keep stirring it in. It cuts down on the acidity so DH and DS don't get hearburn.
