Baking a rum cake for teachers at school...

Do you think that would be ok. We have Parent-Teacher conferences this week and the parents are bringing in dinner for the teachers. I signed up for dessert and for some reason I'm in the mood to make a rum cake. They want something beyond the typical brownies and i make really good rum cake. All the rum is of course cooked out, but do you think this will still be ok?

My advice would be that the more rum the better. Load that puppy up!!!!!!

Ooh, yum, rum cake. My only fear would be that one of the teachers may abstain from alcohol for whatever reason. Even though it may be cooked out, they may not eat it anyway or may eat it and then be upset because it had rum in it and they didn't know. You can bake one and send it my way though!!

My only suggestion would be to leave out the cake.

Just kidding. I think a rum cake would be fine. I thinks it's so nice that the parents are bringing the teachers dinner.

It depends...I'm assuming that the meal is served after the kids have left, but is it served after the conferences? I made a rum cake recently and I'm sure I really smelled like rum after eating a piece and I wouldn't want the teacher smelling like rum and then having a parent conference and having the parent wonder if they'd been drinking. Also, I would label the cake since some people would not want to eat it for various reasons (even though I know the alcohol does cook out of it). I probably wouldn't make it for school, personally, at least not without checking with the school first.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. I assume it is on school grounds. I bet it would be against policy. Also as said above, do you really want teachers talking to other parents with alcohol on their breath, or chance serving the cake to a recovering alcoholic.

I wouldn't. What if one of the teachers is in recovery? I wouldn't want to do anything that would screw with that.

If you do make it, I think you should make a little card or something saying that there is rum in it.

Don't make it. Many districts prohibit any alcohol on campus, whether it be in food or in a bottle. I know ours does.

On the other hand, you could send it to my home address. I'll be sure to enjoy it.

I'm a teacher, sitting here trying to imagine how a rum cake would go over at my school. I don't think it would do very well. The teachers at my school do LOVE anything chocolate though.

* A previous poster brought up an important point I had not even thought of...if the cake does leave a rum scent on a person's breath, then I don't think it's a good idea.

Whatever you do decide to bake, please know that it is well-appreciated.

I'd say go for it and just put a label on it, then it's there choice. My rum cake recipe soaks in rum so the alcohol is not being cooked off and I still would bring that in and jst give people the choice.

I say go for it. Label it and they will know it has rum in it. Alcohol bakes out of cake. If in doubt, ask the school.

Well there is a difference between baking a cake with rum and soaking a cake with rum Most pound cakes (at least most Irish poiund cakes) are made with whiskey and most people wouldn't balk at that.

It's one of those cakes that you make and then don't want to share... Seriously last time I made it I made it when I knew DH would be away and WHOOPS kids can't have it because there's Amaretto in it so it was ALL MINE!!!!!!!!!
