Bagging your own groceries rant

our local stop and shop has a bunch of ring it yourself lanes, which i love, but when i'm at the big y sometimes i get someone who will bag my groceries and sometimes not. i annoys me when employees loafing in the front of the store doing nothing just stand there and watch you struggle bagging while there is a line a mile long behind you. i guess i just feel like how hard would it be if the cashier just instead of taking the item scanning it and placing it on the conveyor belt just turned to their side and placed it in a bag (i mean, they generally have one of those bagging places right next to them)? especially for items like cans or boxed goods. i can see why some of them wouldn't want to do that for say fruits and vegetables and eggs, which is fine by me.

Our baggers might help you but I truly prefer to bag myself...

I worked at a grocery store for about 4 years when I was a teenager. People hardly ever helped bag their own grociers. Hey I got paid by the hour and it was my job so I did it, neatly and always bagged heavy things first light things on top. Now when I go to the store I feel the same way,it is their job so I only help after I saw everything rung up,I like to check what it rings up for,and after I pay. I really can not stand that they could care less how they throw it in the bag.Maybe it is also the fact that they only use plastic now where I live, everything gets squished,or you have 25 bags to carry because you can't put to much in a plastic bag.Anyway I do think the cashier should bag your things(unless it is a bag your own lane)it is part of their job and it should be done neatly. If you don't want to bag your things don't go to these stores or through those lines.

I would have complaned. If it was me with my 4 dd. I would have made it known that he was goofing off. :clown:

Is the store a self bag or not? That would settle the question of whether or not to complain. :confused3

Remember the days of self serve vs. full serve gas stations? If you wanted full service you paid for it. If you went to self service and the attendant was just standing around, so what, you were paying for self serve and had no reason to complain.

Just my 2 cents....MamaCatNV

I shop at Krogers, and they had better bag my stuff cause I'm not doing it. I also hate the self check outs. They are forcing us to use them but I only use them when I have one or two items. I'm paying for service and I should get it.
If I wanted self service, I would patronize a self service store.

Huh. Our Cub has always bagged for us. I know I expect it when I go there. I guess it must differ by region. :confused3

So true, so true!

My local "full" service store (Hy-Vee) still sacks groceries, but when they remodeled the store, they took out the pick up lane (turned it into a drive up pharmacy lane) and no longer ask you if you want pick up. They will still load your groceries for you, but you have to ask. And where they have you pick up is right in front of one of the entrances, blocking both pedestrians and traffic. :confused3

Don't get me started on the self-checkout!!!! They have the highest prices in town and now I get to scan and bag my own groceries, along with loading them into my car? It drives the store manager nuts to see people choosing to wait in lines 2-3 deep instead of using the self-checkout. I've used it twice because my kids wanted to, and there was always some glitch and hassle with it. Took twice as long to get through. I was in there one Saturday morning (a time I try to avoid) and they had store employees running the self checkouts regular lines. :rotfl:

I have been to this Cub foods before and they always bagged my stuff. I was in a lane that split with two conveyor belts so it must be a "self bagging" lane. I think if they expect you bag your own stuff they should have signs so niave people like me won't get confused.

I've lived in various placed in Illinois and Wisconsin and I've never even heard of bagging yourself or seen anyone doing it (except ALDI). I've also never had any food items get smashed because of a poor bagging job :confused3

I guess I won't say anything to the manager. I will choose another grocery store though next time. I just don't see how a guy standing around instead of bagging is saving the store money so they can have lower prices.

Try a Supertarget instead. We used to shop @ Cub, but use Supertarget now. Their prices are equal to if not less than Cub, they bag your groceries, and on several occaisions thy have called someone up to the register to hep me get my groceries to my van with me and my small children. Excellent service!

I get mad when I cant bag my own groceries at any store. They put to much in those plastic bags and dont double bag them. The one time a lady ringing us out at a grocery store said I didnt have to bag my groceries it was her job and my boyfriend said yes she did she is very picky when it comes to bagging groceries. I like to put all cold stuff together all box stuff together and all freezer stuff together so I know which bags need to go in first. I know really bad right.

Come on now, Cub Foods is a low cost, bag it yourself grocery store. Bag your own groceries and head on your way. If you want your groceries bagged for you, you have to go to a more expensive store. You end up paying more and some of that payment is for service. There is absolutely no need to complain to the manager of Cub.

Our society wants low prices. This is how you get them at Cub. Aldi is worse, you have to bag your own groceries and BUY the bag if you want it (or bring your own bags).

Lund's, Byerly's, Festival, and stores like them (in Minnesota) are willing to bag for you, but you will pay for it in the end.

:thumbsup2 I put my grocery items on the belt in the same type of order. Usually it gets put together that way. On a good day. :) When the bagger asks paper or plastic, I say paper for everything except the cold stuff. That helps too.

I'm surprised to read that the cashiers will start checking out another customer before you're done bagging! Doesn't their stuff get thrown into yours? That would burn my cookies! I've had a cashier start someone else's stuff while a bagger was getting my stuff loaded into the bags. He was almost done with my stuff. But I still didn't like it. I held my tounge. Well, sure enough once I got home I was short a gallon of milk! :furious: The lady behind me got it.

I won't hold my tounge again! That extra trip back to the store to pick up a replacement gallon of milk was a pain in the patootie. I won't be doing that again!

There are 2 conveyor belts past the cashier, so they can load your groceries on 1 and someone else's on the other. I like to take my time bagging put things in a particular order, and I only shop about once a month, so bagging my big order would hold up the line if they had to wait to check out the next person til I was done bagging.

I don't blame you for taking your time bagging your groceries. Not one bit. I would too. You want it done right and that takes time. :goodvibes :)

Thanks for clarifying about check out. I didn't know there were two belts for one cashier! I hadn't heard of that!

I wish we had Super Target but there aren't any in Madison, WI. When I lived in Naperville, IL there were two Super Targets within 5 miles of my house. Those were the days.

I just realized from other people's postings that my stuff ends up bagged right because of the way I put it on the conveyor belt. I take all the freezer stuff out of the cart together, then cans, the fridge, etc.

And I disagree with the Minnesota guy who posted above. There are other places just as cheap as Cub foods who will bag your groceries. I'm just saying I would rather go to a place that will. You don't necessarily have to sacrifice service for price.

I can't remember the last time I didn't bag my own groceries. Usually I do the quick you scan checkouts though because they are faster then waiting in the line. When I was visiting my parents for christmas I was shocked that not only did the baggers automatically bag the groceries but they also took them out to our car. That would never happen here!

I usually help them bag ....they do some...I do some. There is one woman that never bags. I refuse to checkout in her aisle.

It's a self-bagging store; thus, the cashier is not expected to bag.

You're angry that the cashier didn't go "above and beyond" his job description, but that's just not a realistic expectation. Should he also help you carry stuff to the car just because no one's in line right now? Should he tie your kids' shoes?

He did his job. Nothing more, nothing less. There's no room to complain.

When I asked the question, I didn't realize it was a self-bagging store. They have bagged my groceries every other time I've gone there. Bagging groceries and tieing a shoe are not even worth comparing. I'm not angry about it. I've actually just more suprised about all the people who do bag their own groceries. I learned something new.
