This is what US Air says are acceptable demensions for luggage:

Each piece of baggage to be checked without charge cannot exceed a weight of 70 pounds and dimensions of 62 inches, 55 inches and 45 inches, respectively, in overall length, width and height.

I think I understand that, but it is a hugh suitcase!!!!!!!

Then it goes on to explain what they won't take and what they charge extra for....

An extra charge applies for additional, overweight, and/or oversized pieces. In no event will US Airways accept baggage that weighs more than 100 pounds and/or baggage that measures in single dimensions more than 72 inches or combined dimensions exceeding 115 inches. Special items such as pets, surfboards, bicycles, scuba equipment, etc. are not included in the customer's free baggage allowance and are subject to an extra charge.

Now, when I add up the dimensions that are "free" I get 162 which is more than 115??

What am I not reading correctly???????

They are setting a limit on one piece, not the combined total of two or more.

And they wonder why we are confused!

This whole thing looks strange. Supposedly somewhere on the web site they say that each piece cannot exceed 62 linear inches (which is height + depth + length) I guess you could have flat thing that was 62 inches and they would let it on.

However, I think they are saying that any individual piece that exceeds 115 linear inches just isn't going on thier plane!

Baggage Weight and Size Limitations
All checked baggage is subject to the following restrictions:

Weight
Items should not weigh more than 70 lbs.
Items weighing between 70 and 100 lbs will be charged an excess baggage fee.
Items over 100 lbs will not be accepted.

Size
Items over size limits will be charged an excess baggage fee.
Items over 80" will not be accepted.
Items cannot exceed 62" (length + height + width) limits.

Actually somewhat more understandable.

Be careful about the size of your luggage and be careful about the number of pieces for each traveler.

Some airlines are beginning to charge a fee if you check more than 2 pieces of baggage per person! This could be $40 or more.
