Can anyone tell me which airlines charge for the first bag being checked? We have five of us flying, and it will get pretty expensive if we have to pay for baggage for one bag for each of us!

Right now we are looking at Continental, JetBlue and Southwest .... do any of these charge baggage fees? I checked their websites and it looks like jst Continental does....is this so?

Jetblue and SW still offer free luggage. I know JB is 1 free bag per ticketed passenger. SW is/was 2 free bags per ticketed passenger (not sure if it's changed as I've not used them for the past year). I fly Jetblue exclusively now and have for the past couple of years.

SWA is still 2 bags fly free with each passenger. However, bags have to be within their size requirements and be less than 50 pounds to avoid fees.

The legacies (Continental, USAir, Delta, United) all charge for the 1st bag unless you are an elite level flyer or in some cases have their credit card.

SW= 2 bags free but have open seating to contend with.
JB= 1 bag free, 2nd bag at $35
All others charge various fees for any checked bag, but some (or maybe all) give you free bags with first class.

A suggestion would be, if not on SW or JB, to combine your extra stuff that isn't taken on board for each person into just a few checked bags, then separate when you get there. You may not need each and every person to check a bag if they also bring some stuff on board and combine overflow into a few pieces of checked luggage. When flying we generally check just one bag for two of us.

Be sure to weigh the bags if you are stuffing them...over 50 pounds and they hit you hard with fees.
